Risk level

Usually safe to check without specialist tools.

Urgency

Low

Quick answer

Roomba says Error 15: it had an internal error and handled it by itself; iRobot says you do not need to do anything and can press CLEAN to carry on. Only if it appears on every job, reboot by holding the button for 9 seconds.

Safety first

Stop and check this first

  • A factory reset erases maps, schedules and settings. Do it only after the reboot and after trying another map, in the order iRobot gives.
  • If you reach the battery and it is swollen, deformed or leaking, do not refit or charge it: take it to authorized service.

Safe checks you can perform

  • Keep using the robot
  • 9 second reboot
  • Revert to an earlier map or remap

What a technician must be able to justify

Technician visit

These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.

These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.

  1. Battery reseat guided by iRobot

What they doiRobot includes removing the battery for about ten seconds and reinstalling it; if reaching it means opening the robot or the battery looks wrong, do it with Customer Care or an authorized service.

They must show youthe condition of the battery when removed.

In writingwhether the battery is in good condition or replaced, with its reference.

  2. Review by Customer Care

What they doIf the error persists after the reboot, the new map and the factory reset, iRobot reviews the robot.

They must show youthe case number and what they checked.

In writingthe diagnosis and whether it is covered by warranty.

Before accepting a part or repair

Nothing has been shown yet. Do not accept a part swap based on the code alone.

Follow these steps

Note: Follow the documented order. An error code identifies the affected system, but it does not prove by itself which part has failed.

  1. Keep using the robot

    No special tools

    Who:
    you.
    How:
press CLEAN and carry on as usual, as iRobot says. No repair is needed if the message does not repeat.
    Result that matters:
whether Error 15 returns on the next jobs.
    If it does not return:
it was an informational notice; do nothing else.
If it appears on every job:
    reboot the robot.
    Evidence to keep:
a note of the date and whether it followed a battery change or reconnection.

    Evidence: Roomba: Error 15

  2. 9 second reboot

    No special tools

    Who:
    you.
    How:
press and hold the robot's button for 9 seconds and release it. The light ring swirls clockwise in white for up to a minute and a half; the reboot is complete when the light ring turns off.
    Result that matters:
whether the error stops appearing on every job after the reboot.
    If it stops:
    solved.
    If it continues:
check the map in the app.
    Evidence to keep:
the reboot date and the result of the next job.

    Evidence: Roomba: Error 15

  3. Revert to an earlier map or remap

    No special tools

    Who:
you, in the iRobot HOME app.
    How:
in History, open the Clean Map reports, pick a map from a job that went well and use the overflow menu to Update Smart Maps. If that is not enough, delete the Smart Maps and create a new one.
    Result that matters:
whether the error goes away with the restored or new map.
    If it goes away:
the problem was in the saved map.
    If it continues:
iRobot suggests a factory reset from the app and then contacting Customer Care.
    Evidence to keep:
a screenshot of the restored map and the date of the change.

    Evidence: Roomba: Error 15

What it means

The i Series chart calls it an internal board error, but the code page for Roomba and Braava jet explains that the robot had an internal error, took care of it and only lets you know afterwards. iRobot adds that seeing Error 15 at power up after removing and reinserting the battery is expected. Only if it appears on every job and gets in the way does it suggest steps: reboot, revert to a previous Smart Map, remap and factory reset. The code does not indicate a faulty board.
