Risk level

Usually safe to check without specialist tools.

Urgency

Medium

Quick answer

F.741 means that while the outdoor unit was defrosting, the water coming back from the house fell below 13 °C. The compressor stays blocked until the return is above 20 °C. Open heating zones, clear the outdoor unit and tell your installer.

Safety first

Stop and check this first

  • The aroTHERM plus outdoor unit contains flammable R290 refrigerant, and a protective zone around it must stay free of ignition sources. Do not open the casing: only a qualified professional may work inside it.
  • Before working on the electrics, the installer must isolate all poles and wait at least 3 minutes for the capacitors to discharge, according to Vaillant.

Safe checks you can perform

  • Record the fault and read the water pressure
  • Keep heating zones and radiators open
  • Outdoor unit clear of snow and leaves
  • Avoid repeated resets and let the return recover

Leave these tasks to a qualified professional

  • Do not attempt this professional task: Enable and test the electric back-up heater
  • Do not attempt this professional task: Review defrost behaviour and sensors
  • Do not attempt this professional task: Check the minimum installation volume

What a technician must be able to justify

Technician visit

These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.

These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.

  1. Enable and test the electric back-up heater

What they doThe technician switches on the back-up heater in the product control panel and in the system control, as the manual describes, and checks it works during a real defrost.

They must show youthe back-up heater settings on both controls and the return temperature rising.

In writingwhich parameters were changed, with old and new values.

  2. Review defrost behaviour and sensors

What they doIf the system itself is sound, the professional reviews defrost duration and the flow and return sensor readings before replacing anything.

They must show youtemperatures read on the service tool and sensor resistance compared with the table in the manual.

In writingthe measurements, any parts replaced and the reason.

  3. Check the minimum installation volume

What they doA certified heat pump installer works out the real water volume of the system and compares it with the Vaillant minimum; if it falls short, a series return cylinder is considered.

They must show youthe system volume calculation against the manufacturer minimum and the S.283 and S.284 status codes in the history.

In writingthe measured volume and whether a cylinder is added, with its capacity.

Before accepting a part or repair

Nothing has been shown yet. Do not accept a part swap based on the code alone.

Follow these steps

Note: Follow the documented order. An error code identifies the affected system, but it does not prove by itself which part has failed.

  1. Record the fault and read the water pressure

    No special tools

    Who:
    you, from the unit display.
    How:
note the code, the time and roughly how cold it is outside. Then open the Live Monitor menu and read the water pressure; Vaillant gives 0.07 MPa (0.70 bar) as the minimum operating pressure of the heating circuit.
    Result that matters:
a written record of the fault and a pressure at or above 0.7 bar.
    If the pressure is lower:
ask your competent person to top up the heating water and find the leak, as the manual says.
    If the pressure is fine:
move on to checking that zones are open.
    Evidence to keep:
photo of the display with F.741 and of the pressure reading.

  2. Keep heating zones and radiators open

    No special tools

    Who:
    you, no tools needed.
    How:
make sure room thermostats and thermostatic radiator valves are not all turned down or shut. To defrost, the heat pump borrows heat from the water in your house, so more open circuits give it a bigger reserve.
    Result that matters:
most rooms calling for heat as usual.
    If many zones were closed:
open them and watch whether F.741 comes back on the next cold days.
    If they were already open:
the installer needs to check the system volume.
    Evidence to keep:
a note of which zones or radiators were shut.

  3. Outdoor unit clear of snow and leaves

    No special tools

    Who:
you, from outside and without opening any cover.
    How:
look at the air inlet and outlet grilles. The aroTHERM plus manual asks you to regularly remove snow, branches and leaves that collect around the product.
    Result that matters:
clear grilles and free space around the unit.
If snow or leaves were blocking the airflow:
    remove them without metal tools.
    If it was clear:
note it and pass it on to your installer.
    Evidence to keep:
photo of the outdoor unit before and after clearing it.

  4. Avoid repeated resets and let the return recover

    No special tools

    Who:
    you.
    How:
Vaillant states that the message stays until the return water climbs above 20 °C and that the compressor is blocked meanwhile. Do not keep switching the system off and on, and ask your installer whether the electric back-up heater is enabled on your unit.
    Result that matters:
learning whether the message clears by itself once the system warms up again.
If the message goes away on its own and stays away:
keep your notes for the next annual service.
If it returns in every cold spell:
book a visit to check volume and back-up heating.
    Evidence to keep:
dates and times when F.741 appeared and cleared.

What it means

On aroTHERM plus systems, Vaillant shows F.741 when the building circuit return temperature drops below 13 °C during de-icing. It also ends in F.741 after three failed restarts caused by de-icing lasting over 15 minutes or by a flow temperature below 5 °C. While the message is active the compressor will not run, and it stays on screen until the return rises above 20 °C. F.741 on its own does not prove any part has failed; most often the system simply lacks stored heat to complete the defrost.

Warnings and stop conditions

Symptoms and causes

Probable causes · in order

  • Too little heat in the building circuit for defrostingCommon

Vaillant asks installers to check that enough heat energy is available from the building circuit; with nearly every room or zone shut, the water cools quickly during de-icing.

  • System water volume below the minimumPossible

The remedy in the manual is to make sure the minimum installation volume is met and, if needed, fit a series return cylinder.

  • Electric back-up heater not enabledPossible

Vaillant suggests activating the electric back-up heater on the product control panel and in the system control to raise the return temperature.

  • Long defrosts or very cold flowPossible

If de-icing takes longer than 15 minutes or the flow drops under 5 °C, the unit restarts; after the third unsuccessful attempt F.741 is logged.
