Quick answer

Chaffoteaux 101 (or 1 01) is a non-volatile lockout caused by overtemperature in the main heating circuit. With the system cold, check that the pressure gauge reads 0,6 to 1,5 bar, open radiator valves and press RESET once; if 101 returns, call an authorised technician.

Safety first

Stop and check this first

  • If you notice a strong smell of gas, smell burning or see smoke coming from the boiler: do not touch electrical switches or appliances, extinguish any flames, close the main gas valve, open the windows, leave the home and call your gas distributor's emergency service and a qualified technician from outside.
  • Never open the boiler casing or press RESET repeatedly (more than 5 attempts in 15 minutos causes a hard lockout): internal parts carry 230 V and scalding water that only a qualified technician may drain after setting the external bipolar switch to OFF.

Safe checks you can perform

  • Check cold water pressure on the gauge (0,6 to 1,5 bar)
  • Check that radiator valves are open and review the heating setpoint
  • Press the RESET button once after the boiler cools

Leave these tasks to a qualified professional

  • Do not attempt this professional task: Pump LED inspection, heating filter cleaning and 7-minute deaeration cycle
  • Do not attempt this professional task: Primary heat exchanger sensor test and fault history review

What a technician must be able to justify

Technician visit

These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.

These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.

  1. Pump LED inspection, heating filter cleaning and 7-minute deaeration cycle

What they doAfter isolating power at the external bipolar switch (OFF) and closing the gas tap, the technician checks the pump status LED (red = blocked pump or no water; green steady = active; green flashing = speed change; off = no power), tests the pump via parameter 2 6 1, cleans the heating filter and runs the 7 minutos deaeration cycle (PURGE / menu 2 7 1) while venting the manual air bleed on the primary exchanger.

They must show youthe pump LED status, the cleaned heating filter and air-free water from the primary manual bleed valve.

In writingthe pump and filter findings, the final cold pressure (1 to 1,5 bar) and the completed functional test.

  2. Primary heat exchanger sensor test and fault history review

What they doThe engineer compares live temperatures in parameters 8 3 0 (setpoint), 8 3 1 (measured heating flow) and 8 3 2 (return), reviews the last 10 faults in parameter 8 6 0 and tests the primary heat exchanger inlet and outlet probes and limit temperature safety device.

They must show youthe live temperature readings in 8 3 1 and 8 3 2 together with the fault log in 8 6 0.

In writingthe measured temperatures, logged error codes and the original part reference of any sensor replaced.

Before accepting a part or repair

Nothing has been shown yet. Do not accept a part swap based on the code alone.

Follow these steps

Note: Follow the documented order. An error code identifies the affected system, but it does not prove by itself which part has failed.

  1. Check cold water pressure on the gauge (0,6 to 1,5 bar)

    No special tools

    Who:
you, reading the front panel pressure gauge (item 7) with the system cold.
    How:
verify that the pressure gauge needle sits between 0,6 and 1,5 bar when cold (the installer manual states 1 to 1,5 bar when topping up). If pressure is below the minimum, open the bottom filling valve and press ESC (or MODE per Note 1) for 5 segundos so PURGE appears; when the gauge reaches 0,6 to 1,5 bar, close the tap and press the button again.
    Result that matters:
ensure the primary circuit is properly pressurised and purged before resetting.
    If pressure was low:
after restoring 0,6 to 1,5 bar and closing the filling tap, let the purge finish.
    If pressure drops frequently:
Chaffoteaux notes this points to a system leak that requires a plumber or technician.
    Evidence to keep:
photo of the pressure gauge reading when cold and after topping up.

  2. Check that radiator valves are open and review the heating setpoint

    No special tools

    Who:
you, checking your room radiators and the Pigma Advance dial 9 and INFO key.
    How:
make sure radiator valves are open so water can circulate freely, check the heating temperature set with dial 9 (adjustable from 20 to 45 °C in low-temperature mode or 35 to 82 °C in high-temperature mode), and press the INFO button (10) to view the measured heating flow temperature.
    Result that matters:
rule out closed radiator valves or an excessive flow temperature setting.
    If radiator valves were closed:
open them fully and allow the boiler to cool down before resetting.
If radiators were open but stayed cold while the boiler overheated:
suspect trapped air or a pump circulation issue.
    Evidence to keep:
photo of the flow temperature shown in the INFO menu.

  3. Press the RESET button once after the boiler cools

    No special tools

    Who:
you, using the RESET button (12) on the control panel.
    How:
once the boiler has cooled and cold pressure is between 0,6 and 1,5 bar, press RESET once to clear the flashing RESET and 101 message. Never press RESET repeatedly: Chaffoteaux states the board allows at most 5 resets within 15 minutes and locks out on the sixth attempt.
    Result that matters:
see whether the boiler resumes normal operation or locks out again with 101.
If 101 clears and the heating circuit warms up evenly:
monitor the pressure gauge over the next few days.
    If 101 returns:
press ON/OFF to switch off, set the external bipolar switch to OFF, close the gas tap and call an authorised service centre.
    Evidence to keep:
photo of the RESET / 101 screen and note of the single reset attempt.

What it means

In the official Spanish user and installer manuals for the Chaffoteaux Pigma Advance (the official documentation for this Spanish-market boiler is in Spanish), code 101 (printed as 1 01 in the installer table, under functional group 1 for the main circuit) means overtemperature. It is a non-volatile lockout: the display flashes RESET and the code with the warning triangle, and it must be cleared manually with the RESET button. Code 101 alone never proves a part is defective: low water pressure, air pockets, closed radiator valves or a stuck pump all cause the same trip.

Symptoms and causes

Probable causes · in order

  • Low heating water pressure or air trapped in the primary exchangerCommon

When cold system pressure drops below the 0,6 to 1,5 bar range (1 to 1,5 bar when refilling after a stop) or air remains in the primary heat exchanger, heat cannot dissipate and triggers 101.

Evidence: Chaffoteaux Pigma Advance y Pigma Ultra, manual de usuario · Chaffoteaux Pigma Advance 25, 30 y 35, instrucciones de instalación y de utilización

  • Insufficient water circulation from closed radiator valves or a dirty filterPossible

Chaffoteaux requires a minimum heating circulation flow of 300 l/h with thermostatic valves closed; restricted pipework or a clogged heating circuit filter causes rapid overheating.

Evidence: Chaffoteaux Pigma Advance 25, 30 y 35, instrucciones de instalación y de utilización

  • Modulating pump blocked or lacking electrical supplyPossible

On the Pigma Advance pump, a red LED signals a blocked pump or lack of water while an unlit LED indicates no electrical supply, either of which stops primary water circulation.

Evidence: Chaffoteaux Pigma Advance 25, 30 y 35, instrucciones de instalación y de utilización

  • Primary heat exchanger temperature sensor drift or limit tripLess common

An out-of-range reading on the primary heat exchanger inlet or outlet sensor or a fault in the limit temperature safety circuit can trigger lockout 101 without actual boiling.
