Quick answer

On Cointra TND electric water heaters with a digital panel, E1 is a dry heating fault: there is no water in the tank and the temperature rises 10 °C or more in one minute. Unplug the unit, check the cold water valve and fill it as the manual describes.

Safety first

Stop and check this first

  • The electrical connections, heating element and anode sit behind the protective cover; only the Technical Assistance Service or an electrician should open it, always with the unit unplugged.
  • Do not leave the water heater plugged in while it shows E1: it is heating without water. Disconnect it and keep it off until the tank is full and purged of air.
  • The safety valve drain pipe must discharge to open air on a continuous downward slope; never cap or bypass it while you deal with E1.

Safe checks you can perform

  • Unplug the water heater first
  • Check the cold water valve
  • Fill and purge as at first start-up
  • Reconnect and watch the panel

Leave these tasks to a qualified professional

  • Do not attempt this professional task: Confirm filling and normal heating

What a technician must be able to justify

Technician visit

These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.

These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.

  1. Confirm filling and normal heating

What they doThe service technician confirms the tank is full with no trapped air and follows the heating on the panel to see whether E1 comes back.

They must show youthe unit heating normally or the moment E1 returns.

In writingwhat was checked and the result.

  2. Inspect the heating element and anode

What they doWith the unit disconnected and drained, they inspect the heating element, remove scale and check the magnesium anode, as the manual's annual service provides.

They must show youthe condition of the element and the anode.

    In writingany parts replaced.

Before accepting a part or repair

Nothing has been shown yet. Do not accept a part swap based on the code alone.

Follow these steps

Note: Follow the documented order. An error code identifies the affected system, but it does not prove by itself which part has failed.

  1. Unplug the water heater first

    No special tools

The TND connects with a Schuko type plug. Unplug it with dry hands or switch it off with the ON/OFF button so the element stops heating while you check the water. Do not open the unit's protective cover.

Evidence: Cointra TND 50, 80, 100 y 150, termos eléctricos: instrucciones de instalación, uso y conservación

  2. Check the cold water valve

    No special tools

Find the shut-off valve fitted on the cold water pipe feeding the tank and make sure it is open. If someone closed it or drained the tank for a repair or a trip, that is the most likely explanation for E1.

Evidence: Cointra TND 50, 80, 100 y 150, termos eléctricos: instrucciones de instalación, uso y conservación

  3. Fill and purge as at first start-up

    No special tools

With the unit unplugged, open the cold water valve and the hot taps. Once water flows from all of them, close them starting with the lowest, the bidet, and ending with the highest, the shower. This drives the air out of the tank and pipes.

Evidence: Cointra TND 50, 80, 100 y 150, termos eléctricos: instrucciones de instalación, uso y conservación

  4. Reconnect and watch the panel

    No special tools

Plug the unit in and, if the display stays dark, press ON/OFF. It should show the water temperature and a flashing dot while heating. If E1 returns with the tank full, stop there and call the Technical Assistance Service.

Evidence: Cointra TND 50, 80, 100 y 150, termos eléctricos: instrucciones de instalación, uso y conservación

What it means

The manual for the Cointra TND 50, 80, 100 and 150 includes a fault table for the digital panel. In it E1 stands for dry heating failure, detected when there is no water in the tank and the temperature rises 10 °C or more within one minute. The panel signals it with an alarm on the display. The same table lists other codes separately, E3 for the temperature sensor and E4 for water overheating, so E1 points to a lack of water in the tank. If the message returns with the tank full and purged of air, the Technical Assistance Service must inspect it.

Symptoms and causes

Probable causes · in order

  • Empty or partly filled tankCommon

The fault table defines E1 as dry heating: no water in the tank and a temperature rise of 10 °C or more in one minute, typical when the unit is switched on after draining or without having been filled and purged.
