Quick answer

On Ideal boilers, F1 means the water pressure in the heating system is too low. Ideal says to top it up to between 1 and 1.5 bar on the boiler gauge; if the boiler still will not run or pressure keeps dropping, call Ideal or a Gas Safe engineer.

Safety first

Stop and check this first

  • If you suspect a gas leak: put out any naked flame, do not operate electrical switches, open windows and doors, leave the home and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 from outside, as Ideal's guide gives the number.
  • Ideal's guide says that if you cannot re-pressurise, or pressure keeps dropping, you should consult a Gas Safe registered engineer instead of topping up again and again.

Safe checks you can perform

  • System pressure gauge
  • Top up to 1 to 1.5 bar
  • Visible leaks around the home
  • Leak and pressure sensor check

What a technician must be able to justify

Technician visit

These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.

These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.

  1. Locate the water loss

What they doThe engineer checks the system and boiler for leaks, including the safety valve discharge and expansion vessel, and repairs the cause.

They must show youthe leak or the discharge found.

In writingwhat was repaired and the pressure left.

  2. Check the pressure reading

What they doIf pressure is correct but F1 shows, the engineer compares the gauge with the boiler's own reading and checks the sensor and wiring.

    They must show youboth readings.

In writingthe values and any part replaced with its reference.

  3. Annual safety check

What they doAs part of the visit, the engineer can carry out the annual safety check of the boiler, flue and pipework.

They must show youthe flue and combustion checks.

    In writingthe service record.

Before accepting a part or repair

Nothing has been shown yet. Do not accept a part swap based on the code alone.

Follow these steps

Note: Follow the documented order. An error code identifies the affected system, but it does not prove by itself which part has failed.

  1. System pressure gauge

    No special tools

    Who:
    you.
    How:
read the system pressure gauge on the boiler with the heating off.
    Result that matters:
whether it is under 1 bar.
If it is under 1 bar:
top up as in the next check; that fits F1.
If it reads 1 to 1.5 bar with F1 showing:
the reading itself is suspect; call Ideal or a Gas Safe engineer.
    Evidence to keep:
a photo of the gauge and display.

  2. Top up to 1 to 1.5 bar

    No special tools

    Who:
you, as your boiler's user guide describes.
    How:
re-pressurise using the filling loop until the gauge shows 1 to 1.5 bar, then restart the boiler.
    Result that matters:
whether F1 clears and pressure holds.
If F1 clears and pressure holds for days:
a one off loss, such as bleeding, is likely.
    If pressure falls again:
Ideal's guide says a leak may be indicated; call a Gas Safe registered engineer.
    Evidence to keep:
daily gauge readings for a week.

  3. Visible leaks around the home

    No special tools

    Who:
    you.
    How:
look, without opening anything, under radiators and valves, round the boiler and at the pipe from the safety valve outside.
    Result that matters:
    any drip, stain or water.
    If you find water:
tell the engineer where; it locates the loss.
    If nothing shows:
the leak may be hidden or internal; the engineer checks it.
    Evidence to keep:
    photos of any wet spot.

  4. Leak and pressure sensor check

    Tools required

    Who:
Ideal or a Gas Safe registered engineer.
    How:
checks the boiler, safety valve, expansion vessel and pipework for water loss and the pressure sensor reading.
    Result that matters:
    where the water goes.
    If a leak is found:
it is repaired and the system refilled.
If no loss is found and the reading is wrong:
    the sensor circuit is checked.
    Evidence to keep:
a job sheet with what was found.

Inside the boiler there are gas and mains parts; Ideal directs these checks to its engineers or a Gas Safe registered engineer.

What it means

Ideal's fault code FAQ and the Instinct2 user guide give F1 as low water pressure in the sealed heating circuit. The guide says the original installation pressure is 1 to 2 bar, that a pressure which keeps falling over time may mean a water leak, and that the boiler will not operate below 0.3 bar. F1 reports the pressure reading only: it does not say whether water was lost through a leak, the safety valve or radiator bleeding, or whether the sensor itself misreads.

Symptoms and causes

Probable causes · in order

  • Water lost from the systemCommon

Fits if pressure falls again days after topping up; Ideal's guide says a continuing fall may mean a leak.

    Evidence: Ideal Instinct2 user guide

  • Pressure drop after bleeding radiatorsPossible

Fits if F1 appeared right after bleeding radiators or draining; one top up holds and the code does not return.

Evidence: Ideal Instinct2 user guide · Ideal Heating FAQ: what does my boiler fault code mean?

  • Pressure sensor or readingLess common

Fits if the gauge shows 1 to 1.5 bar yet F1 stays; the boiler then needs Ideal or a Gas Safe engineer.
