Quick answer

Junkers D1 points to a fault in the return temperature sensor or a return that is too hot. Note the three digit number, wait a few minutes without touching anything and, if it stays locked out, press reset once only.

Safety first

Stop and check this first

  • If you smell gas: Bosch says do not smoke or use lighters, do not operate electrical switches or use the phone or doorbell, close the gas valve at the meter or regulator, open doors and windows, warn the neighbours and leave the building. Call your gas distributor's emergency number from the street.
  • Do not open the boiler to dry or reconnect the sensor: Bosch says only a competent technician may remove the casing. Inside there is mains voltage and gas parts.

Safe checks you can perform

  • Gas or flue gas smell near the boiler
  • Code and three digit number
  • Water under the boiler or on the front
  • Wait and a single reset
  • Sensor, wiring and circulation by the technician

Leave these tasks to a qualified professional

What a technician must be able to justify

Technician visit

These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.

These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.

  1. Return sensor check

What they doThe technician measures the NTC return sensor and checks its cable and connector for moisture, short circuit or a break.

They must show youthe connector and the sensor reading.

In writingthe value measured against the manufacturer's specification and whether it was dried, reconnected or replaced.

  2. Information menu reading

What they doReads i2 last error to see which cause number comes with D1 and whether it repeats.

They must show youthe menu screen.

    In writingthe codes read.

  3. Water circulation if 286 was shown

What they doUses pump test t3 to check the pump moves the water when the return has overheated.

    They must show youtest t3.

In writingthe result and the cause of the overheating.

Before accepting a part or repair

Nothing has been shown yet. Do not accept a part swap based on the code alone.

Follow these steps

Note: Follow the documented order. An error code identifies the affected system, but it does not prove by itself which part has failed.

  1. Gas or flue gas smell near the boiler

    No special tools

    Who:
    you.
    How:
walk up without pressing switches or turning lights on and notice whether there is a smell of gas or combustion fumes.
    Result that matters:
whether there is a smell or not.
    If there is a smell:
do not touch the boiler and follow the gas warning on this page.
    If there is no smell:
go on to note the full code.
    Evidence to keep:
the time and what you noticed.

  2. Code and three digit number

    No special tools

    Who:
    you.
    How:
write down D1 and the number shown below it, 240, 241 or 286, as Bosch asks when you report a fault.
    Result that matters:
    which number is shown.
If it is 240 or 241:
it points to the sensor or its connection.
    If it is 286:
it points to the return water overheating.
    Evidence to keep:
    a photo of the display.

  3. Water under the boiler or on the front

    No special tools

    Who:
    you.
    How:
without opening the casing, look at the floor under the boiler and at the front for drops or water marks.
    Result that matters:
    whether there is visible moisture.
    If you see water:
take a photo: Bosch links number 240 to moisture on the sensor.
    If it is dry:
the sensor connection or the heat become more likely.
    Evidence to keep:
a photo of the floor and the bottom of the boiler.

  4. Wait and a single reset

    No special tools

    Who:
    you.
    How:
leave the boiler alone for a few minutes: Bosch describes a 300 second wait before lockout. If it stays locked out, press reset once.
    Result that matters:
whether it returns to normal operation without D1.
    If it starts:
note the day and time; if D1 returns, call the technician.
    If the code returns:
Bosch says some codes cannot be cleared with a reset; call the service team.
    Evidence to keep:
the time of the code and the reset result.

  5. Sensor, wiring and circulation by the technician

    Tools required

    Who:
    authorised technician.
    How:
with the power off, checks the NTC return sensor and its cable for moisture, short circuit or disconnection, and checks circulation with the pump test.
    Result that matters:
whether the sensor reads correctly and whether there is real overheating.
If the sensor is wet, loose or out of specification:
cause 240 or 241 is confirmed.
If the sensor is fine and 286 was shown:
the reason the return overheats has to be found.
    Evidence to keep:
a report with the value measured, the connection checked and any part replaced.

Bosch allows only a competent technician to remove the casing; inside there is mains voltage and gas parts.

What it means

On the Cerapur Excellence Compact, D1 is a return sensor error, the NTC sensor that measures the water coming back from the radiators. With number 240 Bosch means a wet or damaged sensor; with 241, a disconnected or damaged sensor, and in both cases the boiler waits 300 seconds before locking out. With 286 the return temperature is too high through overheating, after passing 95 °C without cooling. The code does not prove the sensor is broken: it may be moisture, a loose connector or real heat.

Symptoms and causes

Probable causes · in order

  • Return sensor wet or short circuitedPossible

This is the cause for number 240: Bosch refers to moisture on the sensor. It fits if there is dripping or condensation inside the boiler.

Evidence: Junkers Cerapur Excellence Compact ZWB...A..., instrucciones de instalación y manejo para el técnico (6 720 820 575)

  • Sensor disconnected or damagedPossible

This matches number 241. It fits if D1 appears regardless of temperature, even with the boiler cold.

  • Return too hotPossible

This is number 286: boiler overheating after the return passes 95 °C and does not drop. The sensor reads correctly; the problem is the heat.
