Quick answer

E8 is a high temperature and overload protection that, in cooling, halts the compressor while the indoor fan blows, and in heating shuts the whole unit down. Disconnect the power, clean the filter, clear the outdoor unit without opening it and call a technician if E8 returns.

Safety first

Stop and check this first

  • Do not open the outdoor unit to look at the E8 fan. Gree's service manual requires waiting at least 20 minutes after cutting the power, or measuring the capacitor below 20 V, before touching the board, so leave it to the E8 technician.
  • With E8, Gree asks you not to repair the unit yourself. If the power cord also gets hot, there is a burning smell, abnormal noise or the breaker trips often, turn it off and disconnect the power at once and call an HVAC technician.

Safe checks you can perform

  • See E8 on the indoor display
  • Filter and outdoor unit surroundings for E8
  • Fans, capacitor and board per the E8 diagram

Leave these tasks to a qualified professional

  • Do not attempt this professional task: Follow Gree's E8 diagram
  • Do not attempt this professional task: Clean the heat exchanger if heat radiation is poor

What a technician must be able to justify

Technician visit

These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.

These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.

  1. Follow Gree's E8 diagram

What they doThe technician checks outdoor temperature, heat radiation and fans before proposing a new board for E8.

They must show youboth fans running, the clean heat exchanger and the fan capacitor reading.

In writingE8, outdoor temperature at the visit, checks made, part replaced with its reason, and the date.

  2. Clean the heat exchanger if heat radiation is poor

What they doIf the heat exchanger is dirty, the technician cleans it and clears obstacles around the unit, as Gree specifies for E8.

They must show youthe heat exchanger before and after cleaning and the unit running without E8.

In writingcleaning done, obstacles removed, result of the test without E8 and the date.

Before accepting a part or repair

Nothing has been shown yet. Do not accept a part swap based on the code alone.

Follow these steps

Note: Follow the documented order. An error code identifies the affected system, but it does not prove by itself which part has failed.

  1. See E8 on the indoor display

    No special tools

    Who:
    you.
    How:
Gree shows the error on the dual 8 indicator of the indoor unit. With E8, note whether you were cooling (the compressor stops and the indoor fan keeps blowing) or heating (the whole unit stops), and how hot it was outside.
    Result that matters:
confirming E8 and noting the mode and outdoor heat when it appeared.
    If the display shows E8:
continue with this page and note the time of day.
If the display shows something other than E8:
look that code up on its own page.
    Evidence to keep:
a photo of the display with E8, date, time, mode and rough outdoor temperature.

Evidence: Gree Sapphire installation, service and troubleshooting manual, SAP18HP230V1AH/AO and SAP24HP230V1AH/AO · Gree mini split air conditioner installation and owner's manual, Vireo Plus Ultra

  2. Filter and outdoor unit surroundings for E8

    No special tools

    Who:
    you, with the power cut.
    How:
Gree wants the power disconnected before any cleaning. Open the panel, take out the filter, clean it with a vacuum or with water below 45 °C, dry it in the shade and refit it. Then, without opening the outdoor unit, remove from outside anything blocking its air inlet or outlet.
    Result that matters:
improving heat radiation, the first thing Gree corrects for E8.
If the filter was very dirty or the outdoor unit was blocked:
after clearing it, try again and note whether E8 returns.
If nothing was dirty or blocked:
if E8 repeats, fans and the board come next, which is technician work.
    Evidence to keep:
photos of the filter and outdoor unit before and after clearing them for E8.

Evidence: Gree Sapphire installation, service and troubleshooting manual, SAP18HP230V1AH/AO and SAP24HP230V1AH/AO · Gree mini split air conditioner installation and owner's manual, Vireo Plus Ultra

  3. Fans, capacitor and board per the E8 diagram

    Tools required

    Who:
    certified technician.
    How:
check that the indoor and outdoor fans run normally; if one does not, check its connection, the fan capacitor and the motor. If both run correctly and heat radiation is good, Gree's E8 diagram leads to replacing the outdoor mainboard.
    Result that matters:
whether E8 comes from a fan or from the outdoor control board.
If a fan does not run properly:
the connection is fixed or the capacitor or motor replaced, according to the measurements.
    If the fans run properly:
the outdoor board is checked before it is declared faulty.
    Evidence to keep:
a report with each fan's condition, the capacitor reading and the part replaced for E8.

Fan motors, capacitors and the board run at mains voltage: technician only, after the discharge wait Gree sets.

Evidence: Gree Sapphire installation, service and troubleshooting manual, SAP18HP230V1AH/AO and SAP24HP230V1AH/AO

What it means

In Gree's service manual for the Sapphire SAP18 and SAP24HP230V1AH, the error list names E8 high temperature resistant protection and its procedure is titled high temperature and overload protection. With E8 in cooling the compressor halts while the indoor fan carries on, and in heating mode the whole unit shuts down. Gree checks the outdoor ambient temperature, the indoor and outdoor fans and the heat radiation of both units. E8 on its own does not prove any fault, and other Gree models may differ.

Warnings and stop conditions

  • Higheditorial warning

Do not open the outdoor unit to look at the E8 fan. Gree's service manual requires waiting at least 20 minutes after cutting the power, or measuring the capacitor below 20 V, before touching the board, so leave it to the E8 technician.

Evidence: Gree Sapphire installation, service and troubleshooting manual, SAP18HP230V1AH/AO and SAP24HP230V1AH/AO

  • Highsource verified

With E8, Gree asks you not to repair the unit yourself. If the power cord also gets hot, there is a burning smell, abnormal noise or the breaker trips often, turn it off and disconnect the power at once and call an HVAC technician.

Symptoms and causes

Probable causes · in order

  • Very high outdoor temperaturePossible

If the outdoor ambient temperature is above 53 °C, Gree treats it as normal protection and says to use the unit once that temperature improves.

Evidence: Gree Sapphire installation, service and troubleshooting manual, SAP18HP230V1AH/AO and SAP24HP230V1AH/AO

  • Poor heat radiation of the unitsCommon

Gree asks to improve the radiating environment by cleaning the heat exchanger and removing obstacles around the unit when E8 appears.

Evidence: Gree Sapphire installation, service and troubleshooting manual, SAP18HP230V1AH/AO and SAP24HP230V1AH/AO

  • Indoor or outdoor fanPossible

If a fan is not running normally, the E8 procedure checks its connection, the fan capacitor and the motor, in that order.

Evidence: Gree Sapphire installation, service and troubleshooting manual, SAP18HP230V1AH/AO and SAP24HP230V1AH/AO

  • Outdoor control boardPossible

When fans, temperature and heat radiation are fine and E8 persists, Gree's diagram ends with replacing the outdoor mainboard.

Evidence: Gree Sapphire installation, service and troubleshooting manual, SAP18HP230V1AH/AO and SAP24HP230V1AH/AO
