Urgency

Quick answer

On Midea splits with leak detection, EL 0C means the indoor unit has detected a refrigerant leak. Switch the unit off, ventilate the room, avoid flames and sparks, do not keep restarting it and call a certified refrigeration technician.

Safety first

Stop and check this first

  • With EL 0C, ventilate the room and avoid flames, cigarettes and sparks. Some air conditioner refrigerants, such as R32, are flammable: check your unit's nameplate and leave the rest to the technician.
  • Midea asks for any repair to be done by an authorized dealer or a licensed service provider. Do not open the units or try to add refrigerant yourself.

Safe checks you can perform

  • Read EL 0C on the display
  • Switch off, isolate and ventilate
  • Do not restart the unit
  • Tightness test and vacuum (technician)

Leave these tasks to a qualified professional

  • Do not attempt this professional task: Pressure test with dry nitrogen
  • Do not attempt this professional task: Documented vacuum and charge
  • Do not attempt this professional task: Find and repair the leak

What a technician must be able to justify

Technician visit

These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.

These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.

  1. Pressure test with dry nitrogen

What they doPressurises the circuit with dry nitrogen to the pressure Midea gives and checks that it holds for at least 30 minutes.

They must show youthe gauge with the nitrogen pressure at the start and end of the test.

In writingpressure applied, duration and whether it held.

  2. Documented vacuum and charge

What they doPulls a vacuum to 500 microns for one hour and charges refrigerant, with the additional charge calculated from the pipe length.

They must show youthe vacuum gauge at 500 microns and the scale during charging.

In writingvacuum reached, kg of refrigerant recovered and charged, refrigerant type and date.

  3. Find and repair the leak

What they doThe technician locates the leak with a detector or the pressure test and repairs it before adding refrigerant.

They must show youthe leak point found and the detector or gauge reading.

In writingEL 0C, leak point, repair done and leak test result.

Before accepting a part or repair

Nothing has been shown yet. Do not accept a part swap based on the code alone.

Follow these steps

Note: Follow the documented order. An error code identifies the affected system, but it does not prove by itself which part has failed.

  1. Read EL 0C on the display

    No special tools

    Who:
    you.
    How:
look at the indoor unit display and note the code exactly as shown; in Midea's table, EL 0C is refrigerant leakage detection and EL 01 is a communication error.
    Result that matters:
telling EL 0C apart from EL 01 or other codes starting with EL.
If the display shows EL 0C, follow the safety steps on this page straight away.
If EL 01 or another code appears, read that code's page:
    the advice is different.
    Evidence to keep:
a photo of the display with EL 0C and the time it appeared.

Evidence: Midea ductless split unit system installation instructions (9000 to 24000 BTU) · Midea ductless split unit system owner's manual (9000 to 24000 BTU)

  2. Switch off, isolate and ventilate

    No special tools

    Who:
    you.
    How:
switch the unit off with the remote, cut power at the disconnect switch near the outdoor unit (and the indoor unit's own switch if separate), open windows and doors and do not light flames, cigarettes or use spark-producing appliances in the room.
    Result that matters:
leaving the unit off and the room well ventilated while the technician is on the way.
If you notice an odd smell or feel unwell, leave the room and keep it ventilated.
If you notice nothing, still keep the unit off:
no smell does not rule out a leak.
    Evidence to keep:
a note of when you switched off and what you did to ventilate.

Evidence: Midea ductless split unit system installation instructions (9000 to 24000 BTU) · Midea ductless split unit system owner's manual (9000 to 24000 BTU)

  3. Do not restart the unit

    No special tools

    Who:
    you.
    How:
although Midea's manual suggests a power reset for other codes, with EL 0C do not switch the unit back on or keep disconnecting and reconnecting it to see if the alert clears.
    Result that matters:
stopping the compressor from running while the circuit is losing refrigerant.
If someone at home wants it on because of the heat or cold, explain that EL 0C is a leak and they must wait for the technician.
If the unit has already been restarted, tell the technician how many times and whether EL 0C came back.
    Evidence to keep:
a note of any restart done before you read this page.

Evidence: Midea ductless split unit system owner's manual (9000 to 24000 BTU)

  4. Tightness test and vacuum (technician)

    Tools required

    Who:
certified refrigeration technician with a leak detector and vacuum pump.
    How:
finds and repairs the leak, pressure tests with dry nitrogen (Midea's start-up checklist asks for 500 psig, 550 maximum, for at least 30 minutes), pulls a vacuum to 500 microns held for one hour and charges the calculated amount.
    Result that matters:
a tight circuit, with the vacuum held and the correct charge.
If the nitrogen pressure drops, the leak is still there:
it must be found and repaired before charging.
If the pressure holds and so does the vacuum, the refrigerant is charged and the unit tested.
    Evidence to keep:
a report with the leak point, test pressure and duration, vacuum reached and kg charged.

Refrigerant and pressure work, never with air or oxygen (Midea warns of explosion risk), for a certified refrigeration technician alone.

What it means

In Table 9 of the installation guide for Midea MASAG high wall splits (9,000 to 24,000 BTU), EL 0C is "Refrigerant leakage detection". The owner's manual explains that the indoor unit automatically displays EL0C when it detects refrigerant leakage, a feature on some units only and not available on multi-zone systems. On other Midea models EL 0C may not exist or may mean something else. The code alone never proves where the leak is or which part is faulty.

Warnings and stop conditions

  • Higheditorial warning

With EL 0C, ventilate the room and avoid flames, cigarettes and sparks. Some air conditioner refrigerants, such as R32, are flammable: check your unit's nameplate and leave the rest to the technician.

Evidence: Midea ductless split unit system installation instructions (9000 to 24000 BTU)

  • Highsource verified

Midea asks for any repair to be done by an authorized dealer or a licensed service provider. Do not open the units or try to add refrigerant yourself.

Symptoms and causes

Probable causes · in order

  • Refrigerant escaping through a leakCommon

Midea's manual links low refrigerant to a leak or long-term use, and asks for the leak to be found and sealed before recharging.

Evidence: Midea ductless split unit system owner's manual (9000 to 24000 BTU)

  • Installation jointsPossible

The installation guide asks for a leak test at the pipe connection points before they are insulated, because they are points to watch.
