Quick answer

F11 means the unit failed to switch properly between cooling and heating: the 4-way valve or its coil did not respond as the control expects. Read the code with the remote, note which mode you were in, turn the unit off and contact an authorised dealer.

Safety first

Stop and check this first

  • Do not try to move or tap the 4-way valve because of F11: it sits inside the outdoor unit, next to live components and the refrigerant circuit. Panasonic asks that refrigerant is never released and that the circuit is checked for leaks after any repair.
  • If with F11 the circuit breaker trips frequently or there is abnormal noise, Panasonic says to switch off at the breaker and consult an authorised dealer before using the unit again.

Safe checks you can perform

  • Check F11 with the remote
  • Note the mode and the air before F11
  • Test of the 4-way valve and its coil

Leave these tasks to a qualified professional

  • Do not attempt this professional task: Measure pressures in both modes
  • Do not attempt this professional task: Coil or valve replacement with controlled refrigerant

What a technician must be able to justify

Technician visit

These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.

These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.

  1. Measure pressures in both modes

What they doThe technician measures the gas pressure in cooling and heating and compares it with Panasonic's standard table to see whether the valve switches.

They must show youthe pressures in cooling and heating next to the standard values in the manual.

In writingF11, the pressures measured in each mode, the V-coil condition and the date.

  2. Coil or valve replacement with controlled refrigerant

What they doIf the 4-way valve has to be replaced, the technician recovers the refrigerant, replaces the valve, evacuates and recharges according to the unit's rating plate.

They must show youthe leak test with a detector after the F11 repair and its result.

In writingpart replaced for F11 and why, refrigerant recovered and charged (kg and type R410A), leak test result and date.

Before accepting a part or repair

Nothing has been shown yet. Do not accept a part swap based on the code alone.

Follow these steps

Note: Follow the documented order. An error code identifies the affected system, but it does not prove by itself which part has failed.

  1. Check F11 with the remote

    No special tools

    Who:
    you, with the remote.
    How:
if TIMER blinks and the unit has stopped, hold CHECK for 5 seconds and change the code with the temperature arrow until the beep comes on F11. To leave the F11 diagnosis mode, hold CHECK for 5 seconds again and turn the unit off.
    Result that matters:
that the beep confirms F11 and not another code.
If the beep comes on F11:
it is a cooling/heating switching fault and that is how to describe it to the authorised dealer.
If the beep comes on a code other than F11:
look up the page for that other code.
    Evidence to keep:
F11 written down with the date, time and the mode chosen on the remote.

  2. Note the mode and the air before F11

    No special tools

    Who:
    you, no tools.
    How:
write down whether F11 appeared when changing from cooling to heating or the other way, at start-up in heating or after running a while, and whether warm air came out when you asked for cooling (or cool air when you asked for heat) before it stopped. Do not keep changing modes to provoke F11 again.
    Result that matters:
giving the technician the exact moment the F11 switching failed.
If the air was the opposite of what you asked for before F11:
tell the technician, it points to the valve or its coil.
If you noticed nothing odd before F11:
still hand over the time and mode, since the table needs several repeats.
    Evidence to keep:
mode requested, air temperature you noticed and the time F11 showed.

  3. Test of the 4-way valve and its coil

    Tools required

    Who:
    certified technician.
    How:
first rule out electrical problems, as Panasonic asks before inspecting the refrigeration cycle; then check the V-coil and its connection, and with gauges measure the gas pressure in cooling and in heating against the standard values in the service manual table.
    Result that matters:
whether F11 comes from the electrical command to the coil or from a valve that does not switch.
If the coil or its connection fails:
it is repaired or replaced and the test is repeated in both modes.
If the coil responds but the pressures do not change on switching:
the 4-way valve is the suspect, and replacing it means recovering the refrigerant.
    Evidence to keep:
pressures measured in cooling and heating, coil condition and the conclusion on F11.

What it means

In the error code table of Panasonic's service manual for the CS/CU-UE9PKE and UE12PKE, F11 is the cooling/heating cycle changeover abnormality, judged on 4 occurrences within 30 minutes, and the check points are the 4-way valve and its V-coil. The table gives no emergency operation with F11. The CS-XZ series operating instructions call it 4-way valve switching abnormality. F11 on its own does not prove the valve is faulty, and other Panasonic models may differ.

Warnings and stop conditions

  • Higheditorial warning

Do not try to move or tap the 4-way valve because of F11: it sits inside the outdoor unit, next to live components and the refrigerant circuit. Panasonic asks that refrigerant is never released and that the circuit is checked for leaks after any repair.

  • Mediumsource verified

If with F11 the circuit breaker trips frequently or there is abnormal noise, Panasonic says to switch off at the breaker and consult an authorised dealer before using the unit again.

Symptoms and causes

Probable causes · in order

  • Valve coil (V-coil)Possible

Panasonic lists the V-coil, which actuates the 4-way valve, as one of the two check points when F11 appears.

    Evidence: Panasonic air conditioner service manual PAPAGZ121215CE, CS-UE9PKE, CS-UE12PKE, CU-UE9PKE, CU-UE12PKE

  • 4-way valvePossible

The 4-way valve itself, which reverses the circuit between cooling and heating, is the other point in Panasonic's F11 table.
