Quick answer

E5 means the temperature sensor on the indoor unit heat exchanger is shorted or open. Samsung says to check that sensor, which may need replacing: write down the code and contact service, without opening the casing.

Safety first

Stop and check this first

  • The E5 sensor sits inside the indoor unit, next to the control board: do not open the casing or pull on wires. Switch off at the breaker if you need to wipe the outside of the unit and leave the repair to the technician.
  • If the indoor unit indicator keeps blinking E5, do not keep running the unit blind: Samsung says to contact its service with the code written down.

Safe checks you can perform

  • Read the panel code correctly
  • Identify the exact model
  • Note the code and contact service
  • Indoor sensor measurement

Leave these tasks to a qualified professional

  • Do not attempt this professional task: Measure the sensor resistance
  • Do not attempt this professional task: Check sensor position and connector
  • Do not attempt this professional task: Replace the sensor and test the unit

What a technician must be able to justify

Technician visit

These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.

These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.

  1. Measure the sensor resistance

What they doThe technician disconnects the indoor heat exchanger sensor and measures its resistance, comparing it with Samsung's temperature and resistance table for your model.

They must show youthe meter reading and the value the table gives for the sensor temperature.

In writingthe code E5, the resistance measured, the expected value and the date.

  2. Check sensor position and connector

What they doBefore replacing anything, the technician checks that the sensor is still fixed to the heat exchanger and that its connector on the indoor board is firm and free of corrosion.

They must show youthe sensor in its holder and the connector before and after the check.

In writingthe condition the sensor and connector were found in and what was corrected.

  3. Replace the sensor and test the unit

What they doIf the measurement confirms the fault, the technician fits the sensor specified for the model and runs the unit in cooling and heating until E5 no longer returns.

They must show youthe removed sensor, the new one fitted and the unit running without E5.

In writingthe part replaced and why, the modes tested and the date.

Before accepting a part or repair

Nothing has been shown yet. Do not accept a part swap based on the code alone.

Follow these steps

Note: Follow the documented order. An error code identifies the affected system, but it does not prove by itself which part has failed.

  1. Read the panel code correctly

    No special tools

    Who:
    you.
    How:
look at the indoor unit panel and confirm it shows E5, not E6 or E7, which in the same Samsung tables point to the outdoor sensor and the heater sensor.
    Result that matters:
being sure the alert is the indoor heat exchanger sensor one.
    If it is E5:
continue with this page and do not look for the fault in the outdoor unit.
If it is E6, E7 or another code:
check its own page, because a different sensor is involved.
    Evidence to keep:
a sharp photo of the panel showing E5 and the mode the unit was running in at the time.

  2. Identify the exact model

    No special tools

    Who:
    you.
    How:
find the rating label on the side of the indoor unit and copy the model. Samsung notes that the panel design and codes depend on the model.
    Result that matters:
having the model so service can confirm what E5 means on your unit.
    If you find the label:
note the model and, if you have it, the user manual for that unit.
    If the label is unreadable:
photograph the whole unit and the purchase invoice for service.
    Evidence to keep:
the indoor unit model, a photo of the label and the purchase date.

  3. Note the code and contact service

    No special tools

    Who:
    you.
    How:
Samsung asks you to write down the code when the indoor unit indicator blinks and give it to your service provider. Add when it appeared and whether the unit stopped.
    Result that matters:
a complete report that lets the technician go straight to the indoor sensor.
If E5 returns every time you switch on:
leave the unit off until the visit.
If E5 showed only once and does not return:
keep the note anyway in case it reappears.
    Evidence to keep:
dates and times of each E5, the mode in use (cooling, heating) and the room temperature at the time.

  4. Indoor sensor measurement

    Tools required

    Who:
certified air conditioning technician (F-gas in the EU), for the E5 sensor.
    How:
with the unit isolated, open the indoor unit, check the position and connector of the heat exchanger sensor and measure its resistance against Samsung's table for the model.
    Result that matters:
knowing whether the sensor is shorted, open, out of place or sound.
If the reading is off the table or the sensor is loose:
it is refitted or replaced as Samsung indicates.
If the sensor reads correctly and sits in place:
the technician checks the wiring to the board and the board itself.
    Evidence to keep:
the resistance measured, the reference temperature and a photo of the sensor and its connector.

Opening the indoor unit exposes the control board at mains voltage: certified technician only, with the unit disconnected.

What it means

In the indoor unit error code tables Samsung publishes on its support sites (Malaysia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Latin America), E5 stands for a short circuit or an open circuit in the indoor heat exchanger sensor. Samsung's solution is to check that sensor in the indoor unit, with possible replacement. Samsung notes that the display panel and codes vary by model. E5 on its own does not prove the sensor is broken either, only a measurement settles that.

Warnings and stop conditions

  • Higheditorial warning

The E5 sensor sits inside the indoor unit, next to the control board: do not open the casing or pull on wires. Switch off at the breaker if you need to wipe the outside of the unit and leave the repair to the technician.

Symptoms and causes

Probable causes · in order

  • Heat exchanger sensor shortedCommon

Samsung gives a short in the indoor heat exchanger sensor as the first cause of E5 in its indoor unit tables.

  • Heat exchanger sensor openCommon

The second cause Samsung lists for E5 is the indoor sensor in open circuit, meaning the board gets no valid reading from that sensor.
