Quick answer

The “SALt” display code (often with a beep) on a BWT water softener means the brine cabinet needs refilling with regeneration salt or, on models such as Bewamat, low pipe pressure is reducing suction speed. Top up with salt and reset using SET or OK.

Safety first

Stop and check this first

  • Never use table salt in your water softener and prevent dirt from entering the brine cabinet; if dirt gets in, clean and flush the container with clean drinking water only.
  • Use only regeneration salt that conforms to DIN EN 973 type A, as non-compliant salt can impair operation and invalidate the warranty.

Safe checks you can perform

  • Check the salt level and refill with tablet regeneration salt
  • Reset the SALt alarm with the SET or OK button
  • Verify open supply valves and pipeline operating pressure

Leave these tasks to a qualified professional

  • Do not attempt this professional task: Pipeline pressure test and pressure reducer adjustment
  • Do not attempt this professional task: Brine suction and control inspection by BWT after-sales service

What a technician must be able to justify

Technician visit

These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.

These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.

  1. Pipeline pressure test and pressure reducer adjustment

What they doA plumber or installer tests the supply pressure with a gauge and adjusts the pressure reducing valve (or fits a booster pump) so pressure stays within BWT's specification.

They must show youthe pressure gauge reading within the manual's bar range and a regeneration cycle completing without SALt.

In writingthe measured static and flow pressures, any valve adjustment made and the outlet water hardness.

  2. Brine suction and control inspection by BWT after-sales service

What they doIf SALt occurs again after refilling with DIN EN 973 type A salt, confirming with OK and verifying pipeline pressure, BWT after-sales service inspects the brine suction path and controller.

They must show youthe cause of the low suction speed or sensor fault and the display operating free of SALt.

In writingthe model type and production number (PNR), the parts cleaned or replaced and the test result.

Before accepting a part or repair

Nothing has been shown yet. Do not accept a part swap based on the code alone.

Follow these steps

Note: Follow the documented order. An error code identifies the affected system, but it does not prove by itself which part has failed.

  1. Check the salt level and refill with tablet regeneration salt

    No special tools

    Who:
you, making sure no dirt enters the salt storage area.
    How:
open the lid and check that the salt sits above the minimum level (50 mm above the base on Perla Silk or 150 mm on the WS Range). Refill with water softener tablet salt complying with DIN EN 973 type A (never table salt), wiping the bag clean first.
    Result that matters:
adequate clean regeneration salt in the brine cabinet.
If the storage area on a Bewamat had run completely out of salt:
after refilling and clearing SALt, wait 3 hours for brine to form and start a manual regeneration.
If there was already plenty of salt inside:
continue to the keypad reset step below.
    Evidence to keep:
the salt height before refilling and the specification of the salt tablets used.

  2. Reset the SALt alarm with the SET or OK button

    No special tools

    Who:
you, at the softener control panel.
    How:
on BWT Perla Silk and WS Range units, press and hold the [SET] key until the salt symbol or SALt code disappears and resets to full capacity; on BWT Bewamat 25A/75A, press the OK button until the SALt display goes out.
    Result that matters:
the audible alarm stopping and the display returning to normal service view.
If SALt clears and stays off:
the unit only needed refilling and resetting.
If SALt comes back even with a full salt cabinet:
    check the incoming water pressure.
    Evidence to keep:
a photo of the normal display after resetting or of SALt if it returns.

  3. Verify open supply valves and pipeline operating pressure

    No special tools

    Who:
you, checking the isolation valves and any fitted pressure gauge.
    How:
ensure the mains stop valve and softener inlet and outlet valves are fully open and the bypass valve is closed. BWT specifies an operating pressure of 2.5 to 8 bar on Bewamat 25A/75A (1.0 to 8.0 bar on Perla Silk EU and 1.7 to 5.0 bar on the WS Range).
    Result that matters:
ruling out low supply pressure that restricts brine suction speed.
If pressure was low due to a throttled valve or pressure reducer:
restore normal pressure, press OK to acknowledge and run a manual regeneration.
If supply pressure and salt level are both normal yet SALt recurs on a Bewamat:
    contact BWT after-sales service.
    Evidence to keep:
the measured water pressure (if a gauge is present) and when SALt reappears.

What it means

In the BWT Perla Silk (S, M, L and XL) and BWT WS Range manuals, “SALt” with an audible alarm indicates that the optional low salt reminder is active based on calculated salt usage across completed regenerations; BWT notes that this reminder cannot detect the actual physical salt level. In the BWT Bewamat (25A and 75A) manual, “SALt” on the display indicates either insufficient regenerative in the storage area or insufficient pipeline pressure resulting in low suction speed. Other models may differ, and the code alone does not prove a component fault.

Symptoms and causes

Probable causes · in order

  • Low regeneration salt level or elapsed usage counterCommon

Across Perla Silk, the WS Range and Bewamat 25A/75A, SALt primarily alerts you that salt in the brine cabinet is low or the calculated salt capacity has been used.

Evidence: BWT Perla silk S, M, L, XL Duplex softening unit - Installation and operating manual · BWT Bewamat 25A, 75A Simplex Water Softening Unit - Installation and operating manual · BWT WS Range Water Softener (WS155-WS755) - Fitting and operating instructions

  • Insufficient pipeline pressure causing low suction speedPossible

BWT's Bewamat 25A and 75A manual lists insufficient pipeline pressure resulting in insufficient suction speed as a second direct cause of the SALt display.

Evidence: BWT Bewamat 25A, 75A Simplex Water Softening Unit - Installation and operating manual

  • Salt alarm not acknowledged on the keypad after refillingPossible

On units with a calculated reminder, the SALt message and beep remain active until you press the SET or OK button to reset the salt capacity counter.
