Risk level

Low

Usually safe to check without specialist tools.

Urgency

Low

Quick answer

On LG steam dryers plumbed into the water supply, E05 (or E5) means there was a problem with the water used for the steam cycle. Check the tap is fully open and not frozen or clogged, that the inlet hose lets water through, and clean the inlet filter.

Safety first

Stop and check this first

  • Unplug the dryer and close the tap before undoing the inlet hose, and keep a cloth handy for water left in the hose.

Safe checks you can perform

  • Dryer tap fully open
  • See whether water comes out of the inlet hose
  • Clean the water inlet filter
  • Thaw the tap and hose in a cold location

Leave these tasks to a qualified professional

  • Do not attempt this professional task: Water inlet valve check
  • Do not attempt this professional task: Steam programme test run

What a technician must be able to justify

Technician visit

These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.

These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.

  1. Water inlet valve check

What they doWith plenty of water at the hose and a clean filter, the technician checks whether the dryer's inlet valve opens and lets water through to the steam generator.

They must show youthe inlet valve opening during a steam cycle and water entering.

In writingthe code read, the condition of tap, hose and filter, what was measured at the valve, any part replaced and the result.

  2. Steam programme test run

What they doAfter the work, the technician starts a steam programme and confirms the dryer takes in water and finishes without E05.

They must show youthe steam cycle running without E05 appearing.

In writingthe programme tested, its result and the date.

Before accepting a part or repair

Nothing has been shown yet. Do not accept a part swap based on the code alone.

Follow these steps

Note: Follow the documented order. An error code identifies the affected system, but it does not prove by itself which part has failed.

  1. Dryer tap fully open

    No special tools

    Who:
    you, no tools needed.
    How:
find the tap that feeds the dryer and open it all the way. If it is stiff, or feels cold and rigid in a freezing room, it may be frozen or clogged; do not force it.
    Result that matters:
a fully open tap that turns normally.
If the tap was shut or only partly open:
leave it open and repeat the steam programme.
    If it is open:
    check the inlet hose next.
    Evidence to keep:
photo of the display showing E05 and of the open tap.

  2. See whether water comes out of the inlet hose

    No special tools

    Who:
you, with a bucket and the dryer unplugged.
    How:
close the tap, unscrew the supply hose at the dryer end and point it into the bucket. Open the tap briefly to see if water flows strongly, then close it again. Also look along the hose for kinks.
    Result that matters:
a normal stream of water from the hose.
If only a trickle or nothing comes out:
the problem is the tap or hose, not the dryer.
    If water flows well:
clean the inlet filter before reconnecting.
    Evidence to keep:
short video of water running from the hose into the bucket.

  3. Clean the water inlet filter

    No special tools

    Who:
you, with the tap closed and the hose off.
    How:
a small filter sits in the dryer's water inlet or in the hose thread. Carefully remove any debris, rinse it under running water and screw the hose back on. Open the tap, check the joint does not drip and plug the dryer back in.
    Result that matters:
a clean filter and a watertight connection.
    If the filter was dirty:
once cleaned, try a steam cycle.
If it was clean and E05 returns after a reset:
    have the inlet valve checked.
    Evidence to keep:
photo of the dirty inlet filter and of it rinsed.

  4. Thaw the tap and hose in a cold location

    No special tools

    Who:
you, only if it has been freezing where the dryer stands.
    How:
if the tap is frozen, wrap it in a warm towel until it thaws; if the supply hose is frozen, detach it and soak it in warm water. LG gives these steps for steam models in its frozen dryer guide.
    Result that matters:
tap and hose free of ice and water passing again.
    If there was ice:
reconnect the hose once thawed and try steam again.
    If there was no ice:
carry on with the other checks or request a repair.
    Evidence to keep:
note of the temperature where the dryer is installed.

What it means

LG's dryer error code list (Levant support site, August 2025) describes E05 as a problem with the water supply used for the steam cycle and lists the tap, the inlet hose, the inlet filter and the water inlet valve as the points to check. LG USA's frozen dryer guide explains how to thaw a frozen tap and supply hose on steam models. Only dryers with a steam function use it; an Add message instead means the steam feeder needs water. The code alone does not prove the inlet valve has failed.

Warnings and stop conditions

  • Loweditorial warning

Unplug the dryer and close the tap before undoing the inlet hose, and keep a cloth handy for water left in the hose.

Symptoms and causes

Probable causes · in order

  • Tap closed, clogged or frozenCommon

The steam cycle draws water from the tap; if it is not fully open, is blocked or has frozen, the dryer reports E05.

Evidence: LG Dryer - Error Code List(New) · [LG Dryer] Troubleshooting Frozen Dryers

  • Inlet hose restricting the flowPossible

A kinked or frozen supply hose stops water reaching the dryer normally; LG asks you to make sure it flows freely.

Evidence: LG Dryer - Error Code List(New) · [LG Dryer] Troubleshooting Frozen Dryers

  • Inlet filter holding residuePossible

A small filter at the hose connection can fill with debris; LG says to check and clean it and remove any residue.

Evidence: LG Dryer - Error Code List(New)

  • Water inlet valveLess common

LG includes the inlet valve in its checklist; testing it inside the dryer is work for a technician.
