Risk level

Low

Usually safe to check without specialist tools.

Urgency

Medium

Quick answer

On an LG dishwasher, IE means the water level stays low after filling. First check that water runs from the kitchen tap and that the dishwasher supply valve under the sink is open (counterclockwise).

Safety first

Stop and check this first

  • If the inlet hose is torn or dripping, close the supply valve before touching it and do not run the unit until it is replaced: it is pressurised water next to an electrical appliance.

Safe checks you can perform

  • Household water and dishwasher valve
  • Inlet hose
  • Pressure and inlet valve filter

What a technician must be able to justify

A technician is coming

These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.

These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.

  1. Inlet valve and level detection check

What they doWith the unit disconnected, the technician cleans the inlet valve filter, checks the valve and its connection and verifies water level detection against LG specification.

They must show youthe removed filter and the measurement against specification.

In writingwhat was checked, the pressure measured, the result and the reference of any replaced part.

  2. Drain check on new installs

What they doThe installer checks that the drain hose is placed so water does not leave while the unit fills.

They must show youa complete fill with no loss through the drain.

In writingthe correction made to the installation and the date.

Before accepting a part or repair

Nothing has been shown yet. Do not accept a part swap based on the code alone.

Follow these steps

Note: Follow the documented order. An error code identifies the affected system, but it does not prove by itself which part has failed.

  1. Household water and dishwasher valve

    No special tools

    Who:
    you, no tools.
    How:
open the kitchen tap. If water runs, find the dishwasher supply valve under the sink and turn it counterclockwise; if there is another valve above it, check that one too.
    Result that matters:
    water reaches the dishwasher inlet.
If no tap in the house gives water:
it is a supply outage, not an appliance fault.
If the valve was closed and it fills once opened:
    that was the cause.
    Evidence to keep:
note which valve was closed or whether there was an outage.

  2. Inlet hose

    No special tools

    Who:
    you, no tools.
    How:
with the unit off, follow the inlet hose and look for kinks, pinches or tears. In winter, if the install is in a cold place, wrap the section in warm, damp towels and dry it afterwards.
    Result that matters:
a straight, intact hose with no ice.
If it was kinked or frozen and now fills:
    that was the cause.
    If it is torn:
close the valve and replace it or call a plumber before using the unit.
    Evidence to keep:
    a photo of the hose.

  3. Pressure and inlet valve filter

    Tools required

    Who:
    plumber or technician.
    How:
the professional measures pressure at the inlet and checks the inlet valve filter, which LG lists as a cause when clogged.
    Result that matters:
pressure within 0.05 to 0.6 MPa and a clean filter.
If pressure is low or high:
the water installation is corrected, not the dishwasher (above 0.6 MPa, a reducing valve).
If pressure and filter are fine:
the next step is checking the valve and level detection.
    Evidence to keep:
    the measured pressure in writing.

It needs a pressure gauge and disconnecting the water inlet next to a mains powered appliance: have a plumber or the service technician do it with the unit unplugged.

What it means

LG defines IE as a water inlet error: the dishwasher detects the level is too low, with insufficient water, between 30 seconds and 10 minutes after it starts filling. LG lists a water outage, a closed supply valve, a kinked or frozen inlet hose, a clogged inlet valve filter and low pressure (its guide asks for 0.05 to 0.6 MPa). On a new install, a badly placed drain can let water out while it fills. The code does not prove that the inlet valve has failed.

Warnings and stop conditions

  • Loweditorial warning

If the inlet hose is torn or dripping, close the supply valve before touching it and do not run the unit until it is replaced: it is pressurised water next to an electrical appliance.

Symptoms and causes

Probable causes · in order

  • Water outage or closed valveCommon

Quick to tell apart: if no water runs from the sink it is a household outage; if it does, check the dishwasher valve, which may have been left closed after installation.

Evidence: [LG Dishwasher] Guide to Error Codes · Dishwasher: No water, IE error code

  • Kinked or frozen inlet hosePossible

Visible along the hose. Frozen only where the install is exposed to winter cold; LG says to thaw it with warm, damp towels.

Evidence: Dishwasher: No water, IE error code · LG Dish Washer - No water or IE Error

  • Pressure out of rangePossible

LG asks for 0.05 to 0.6 MPa. Too low and the unit does not fill in time; above 0.6 MPa a pressure reducing valve fitted by a plumber is needed.

Evidence: LG Dish Washer - No water or IE Error

  • Drain badly installed on a new unitPossible

Only in the first 24 to 48 hours of use: if water drains as it fills, the dishwasher cannot hold what the cycle needs.
