Quick answer

On Philips SENSEO coffee machines (such as the HD7810), the light flashing rapidly means a water problem: level below minimum, tank not attached properly, float stuck, dirty tank, or a room colder than 10 °C.

Safety first

Stop and check this first

  • Unplug the machine and let it cool before cleaning the tank or the area where it fits.
  • Do not open the housing to look for the fault: there are mains connected parts inside that only authorised service should touch.

Safe checks you can perform

  • Rapid or slow flashing
  • Tank level and fit
  • Float and tank cleaning
  • Room temperature

What a technician must be able to justify

Technician visit

These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.

These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.

  1. Check of water detection

What they doPhilips service checks water level detection and the tank connection to the machine.

They must show youthe machine detecting water and brewing.

In writingthe cause found and any part replaced, with its reference.

  2. Test coffees

What they doWhen finished, the technician makes several coffees in a row and confirms the light does not flash fast.

They must show youthe coffees made with no warning.

In writingthe test carried out and the date.

Before accepting a part or repair

Nothing has been shown yet. Do not accept a part swap based on the code alone.

Follow these steps

Note: Follow the documented order. An error code identifies the affected system, but it does not prove by itself which part has failed.

  1. Rapid or slow flashing

    No special tools

    Who:
    you, no tools.
    How:
watch whether the light flashes fast or slowly and how long it lasts.
    Result that matters:
knowing whether it is a warning or normal heating.
    If it flashes slowly:
it is heating; if it lasts over 90 seconds, contact Philips.
    If it flashes fast:
    carry on with the tank.
    Evidence to keep:
a short video of the flashing.

  2. Tank level and fit

    No special tools

    Who:
    you.
    How:
fill the tank above the minimum mark and refit it as the manual shows, checking it is attached correctly.
    Result that matters:
the light no longer flashing fast.
    If it stops flashing:
water was low or the tank was misfitted.
    If no change:
    check the float and cleaning.
    Evidence to keep:
a note of the water level there was.

Evidence: The indicator light of my SENSEO® coffee machine flashes

  3. Float and tank cleaning

    No special tools

    Who:
    you.
    How:
empty the tank and shake it a few times to free the float; if it is dirty, clean the inside with hot water and a little washing-up liquid, rinse and refill.
    Result that matters:
a float that moves freely and a normal light.
If the light returns to normal:
the float was stuck or dirty.
    If it still flashes fast:
    check the room temperature.
    Evidence to keep:
    the date of cleaning.

Evidence: The indicator light of my SENSEO® coffee machine flashes

  4. Room temperature

    No special tools

    Who:
    you.
    How:
if the machine is somewhere cold, move it to a room above 10 °C and wait 1 to 2 hours before trying again.
    Result that matters:
the machine starting without rapid flashing.
    If it works:
    the cold was the cause.
If it still flashes fast after all of the above:
    contact Philips Consumer Care.
    Evidence to keep:
the approximate temperature where it stood.

What it means

Philips distinguishes two flash patterns on the SENSEO. Slow flashing only means the machine is heating up; if it lasts more than 90 seconds, Philips asks you to contact its service. Rapid flashing signals a problem to fix, and Philips gives five causes: water below the minimum, the tank not attached correctly, the float stuck inside the tank, a dirty tank, or room temperature below 10 °C. On SENSEO Switch models the same rapid flashing shows on the coffee buttons. The light does not prove any part is faulty.

Symptoms and causes

Probable causes · in order

  • Water below the minimumCommon

The tank holds less water than the minimum mark; filling it above that level is enough.

Evidence: The indicator light of my SENSEO® coffee machine flashes

  • Tank not attached correctlyCommon

The tank is not properly fitted to the machine, so it does not detect the water even when full.

Evidence: The indicator light of my SENSEO® coffee machine flashes

  • Float stuckPossible

The float that measures the level gets caught inside the tank; Philips asks you to empty and shake it to free it.

Evidence: The indicator light of my SENSEO® coffee machine flashes

  • Dirty tankPossible

Dirt inside the tank affects the float; Philips asks you to clean it with hot water and a little washing-up liquid.

Evidence: The indicator light of my SENSEO® coffee machine flashes

  • Room too coldPossible

With room temperature below 10 °C the machine warns; move it somewhere warmer and wait before retrying.
