Quick answer

A solid amber Device Communications LED on the IQ Gateway means at least one microinverter is not communicating with the gateway. Look again in daylight, check the solar breakers are ON and tell your installer if it stays amber.

Safety first

Stop and check this first

  • Do not climb onto the roof to look at microinverter LEDs: home checks stop at the app, the gateway LEDs and the consumer unit.
  • Do not touch panel or microinverter connectors: Enphase forbids disconnecting them under load and reserves troubleshooting for competent personnel.

Safe checks you can perform

  • Look again in daylight
  • Solar circuit breakers in the ON position
  • See which microinverters are missing in the app
  • Think about new appliances on the gateway circuit

Leave these tasks to a qualified professional

  • Do not attempt this professional task: Check signal strength and rescan devices
  • Do not attempt this professional task: Check connection and voltage of the affected module
  • Do not attempt this professional task: Relocate the gateway or isolate it from interference

What a technician must be able to justify

Technician visit

These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.

These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.

  1. Check signal strength and rescan devices

What they doThe installer checks power line communication status and signal strength in the Enphase Installer App and, if needed, runs a new device scan in daylight.

They must show youthe number of communicating microinverters before and after.

In writingthe serial numbers of the devices that were not communicating and what was done to each.

  2. Check connection and voltage of the affected module

What they doOn the specific missing microinverters, the installer checks the module connection and that its DC voltage is within the microinverter range, with the AC branch de-energised.

They must show youthe readings taken on each module and the microinverter LED after the check.

In writingthe readings, the condition of the connectors and whether anything was replaced.

  3. Relocate the gateway or isolate it from interference

What they doIf the signal is weak, the installer considers moving the gateway closer to the consumer unit or powering it from the solar production circuit where local rules allow.

They must show yousignal strength before and after the change.

In writingthe new gateway location or circuit and the cost of the work.

Before accepting a part or repair

Nothing has been shown yet. Do not accept a part swap based on the code alone.

Follow these steps

Note: Follow the documented order. An error code identifies the affected system, but it does not prove by itself which part has failed.

  1. Look again in daylight

    No special tools

    Who:
    you, with no tools.
    How:
check the IQ Gateway LEDs again in sunny hours, mid morning or around midday. Enphase explains that PV modules only power the microinverters in daylight and that, without enough sunlight, the microinverters cannot communicate with the gateway.
    Result that matters:
ruling out a warning caused only by low light, night time or dawn.
If in sunlight the LED turns solid green:
it was low light and nothing needs doing.
If in sunlight it stays amber:
there is a real problem; note the time and continue with the other checks.
    Evidence to keep:
a photo of the LEDs with the time and the weather (sunny, overcast, snow on the panels).

Evidence: IQ Gateway Metered Installation and Operation Manual (Great Britain), 141-00035 Rev 01

  2. Solar circuit breakers in the ON position

    No special tools

    Who:
you, looking at the consumer unit without opening it or touching wiring.
    How:
find the breakers labelled for the solar panels or microinverters and check that each lever is up (ON). Enphase states that the IQ Gateway can only communicate with the microinverters when those PV breakers are ON.
    Result that matters:
knowing whether the solar branch has grid power or is switched off.
    If one is off:
switch it on once; if it trips again, leave it off and call your installer.
    If all are on:
the problem is not there; move on to the next check.
    Evidence to keep:
a photo of the consumer unit showing each breaker position, with the time.

Evidence: IQ Gateway Metered Installation and Operation Manual (Great Britain), 141-00035 Rev 01

  3. See which microinverters are missing in the app

    No special tools

    Who:
you, with the Enphase app on your phone.
    How:
open the system or array view and look for devices without recent data or marked with an error. Enphase recommends checking which devices are not communicating before doing anything else.
    Result that matters:
knowing whether one, several in the same row or all are missing.
    If all are missing:
it points more to the power line link, a breaker or the gateway location.
If one or a few are missing:
it points to those specific modules or microinverters; note their position for the installer.
    Evidence to keep:
a screenshot of the app with the date, time and position of the devices without data.

Evidence: IQ Gateway Metered Installation and Operation Manual (Great Britain), 141-00035 Rev 01

  4. Think about new appliances on the gateway circuit

    No special tools

    Who:
    you, with no tools.
    How:
recall whether anything was recently plugged in or installed on the same circuit or socket that powers the IQ Gateway (for example an appliance or motor driven equipment). Enphase says appliances sharing a circuit with the gateway may interfere with power line communication.
    Result that matters:
finding a change that matches when the warning started.
If it matches a new appliance:
tell your installer; they decide whether to move the gateway or filter the signal.
    If nothing changed:
note it and let the installer check the signal with their app.
    Evidence to keep:
the date the warning started and the appliances on that circuit.

What it means

In the IQ Gateway Metered manual, a solid green Device Communications LED means all devices are communicating and solid amber means at least one is not (or the count does not match the expected number). The gateway talks to the microinverters over the site power lines, and they only power up in daylight. Enphase lists low light, PV breakers off, modules not connected, module voltage out of range or poor power line communication. On an IQ8 microinverter, a flashing orange LED means the grid is normal but there is no communication with the gateway. The warning alone never proves a microinverter is faulty.

Symptoms and causes

Probable causes · in order

  • Low light, night time or dawnCommon

Without enough sunlight the modules cannot power the microinverters, so they cannot communicate; Enphase gives this as the first explanation for solid amber.

Evidence: IQ Gateway Metered Installation and Operation Manual (Great Britain), 141-00035 Rev 01

  • Solar branch circuit breaker offPossible

The gateway can only communicate with the microinverters when the PV circuit breakers are in the ON position at the consumer unit.

Evidence: IQ Gateway Metered Installation and Operation Manual (Great Britain), 141-00035 Rev 01

  • Power line communication interferencePossible

Appliances sharing a circuit with the gateway, or a gateway far from the main consumer unit, can weaken the signal that travels over the wiring.

Evidence: IQ Gateway Metered Installation and Operation Manual (Great Britain), 141-00035 Rev 01

  • Module disconnected or voltage too lowPossible

Enphase asks to verify the modules are connected to the microinverters and their DC voltage is within the allowed range; this is an installer check.
