HP Inkjet Cartridge Missing or Damaged error: checks and steps

Risk level
Low
Usually safe to check without specialist tools.
Urgency
Medium
Quick answer
On HP DeskJet, ENVY, and OfficeJet inkjet printers, a Cartridge Missing or Damaged message (or blinking Error and Ink Level icons with the Ink Alert light on) means a cartridge is not detected. You can check for protective tape, reseat the cartridge, and clean the copper contacts.
Safety first
Stop and check this first
- Never touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles with your fingers, and do not reapply protective tape to the cartridges.
- Use only distilled water on a lint-free cloth to wipe the copper-colored contacts, and allow 10 minutes of drying time before reinstalling.
Safe checks you can perform
- Remove any protective tape and reseat the cartridge firmly
- Clean the cartridge and carriage contacts with distilled water
- Reset the printer for 60 seconds or test single-cartridge mode
Leave these tasks to a qualified professional
- Do not attempt this professional task: Cartridge replacement or HP warranty claim if cleaning does not clear the error
- Do not attempt this professional task: HP service inspection if a brand-new cartridge is also not detected
What a technician must be able to justify
Technician visit
These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.
These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.
Cartridge replacement or HP warranty claim if cleaning does not clear the error
What they doIf removing the tape, cleaning the copper contacts with distilled water, waiting 10 minutes to dry, and resetting the printer do not resolve Cartridge Missing or Damaged, replace the indicated cartridge.
They must show youthe Cartridge Missing or Damaged message and the clean copper-colored contact strip on the cartridge.
In writingthe replacement cartridge number, HP ink warranty verification if applicable, and the support case number.
HP service inspection if a brand-new cartridge is also not detected
What they doWhen a newly unpacked genuine HP cartridge triggers Cartridge Missing or Damaged in the same slot, have HP Customer Support inspect the print carriage.
They must show youthat the same slot fails to detect both the previous cartridge and a brand-new HP cartridge.
In writingthe inspection result for the carriage electrical contacts and latch, plus warranty or repair terms.
Before accepting a part or repair
Nothing has been shown yet. Do not accept a part swap based on the code alone.
Follow these steps
Note: Follow the documented order. An error code identifies the affected system, but it does not prove by itself which part has failed.
Remove any protective tape and reseat the cartridge firmly
- Who:
- you, with the printer turned on and after waiting for the carriage to stop moving completely.
- How:
- open the cartridge access door, identify the affected cartridge (on DeskJet 2700-4800 the left Ink Level icon is tri-color and the right icon is black), remove it, pull the pink or orange tab if any protective tape remains, and push it firmly back into its color-coded slot until it clicks (on Type 3 latches, gently bend a loose tab no more than 1.27 cm / 0.5 in).
- Result that matters:
- making sure the copper-colored contacts are uncovered and seated flush against the carriage.
- If the alert clears when you close the access door:
- the cartridge only had tape left on it or was loose.
- If Cartridge Missing or Damaged stays on screen:
- clean the electrical contacts with distilled water.
- Evidence to keep:
- a photo of the cartridge showing the protective tape completely removed from the copper strip.

Clean the cartridge and carriage contacts with distilled water
- Who:
- you, using a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water.
- How:
- remove the indicated cartridge holding it by its sides, wipe only the copper-colored contacts with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water (do not wipe the nozzles), wipe the electrical contacts inside the carriage with another dampened lint-free cloth, let both dry for 10 minutes, and reinstall.
- Result that matters:
- restoring clean electrical contact between the cartridge strip and the print carriage pins.
- If the printer detects the cartridge after drying and reinstalling:
- dirty contacts caused the error.
- If the error remains after drying for 10 minutes and reseating:
- perform a 60-second power reset.
- Evidence to keep:
- a note of which cartridge slot (left tri-color or right black) had residue on the contacts.

Reset the printer for 60 seconds or test single-cartridge mode
- Who:
- you, if the error persists after cleaning and reseating the cartridge.
- How:
- with the printer turned on, unplug the power cord from the rear and the wall outlet, wait 60 seconds, and plug it back in; if the error continues and you have no spare cartridge yet, remove the problem cartridge to print in single-cartridge mode with the remaining cartridge.
- Result that matters:
- isolating whether the specific cartridge has failed while letting you print urgently with the working cartridge.
- If single-cartridge mode works when the affected cartridge is removed:
- replace only that cartridge.
- If neither cartridge is recognized after the reset:
- check HP warranty coverage or contact HP Support.
- Evidence to keep:
- the warranty end date and lot code printed on the body of the affected HP cartridge.

What it means
HP support guidance for cartridge-based inkjet printers such as the DeskJet 2700, 4100, and 4800 series explains that a Cartridge Missing or Damaged or Cartridge not detected alert appears when an ink cartridge is absent, still has protective tape attached, is not fully seated in its slot, or has dirty electrical contacts. On icon displays, the Error icon and affected Ink Level icon blink while the Ink Alert light turns on or flashes. Other HP models may display different alerts, and this message alone never proves that the print carriage assembly has failed.
