Risk level

Low

Usually safe to check without specialist tools.

Urgency

Low

Quick answer

Your Fitbit tracker or watch stops syncing and the Google Health app shows 'Something went wrong. Try again (Error Code 2)'. Check the Location and Nearby devices permissions, switch the phone Bluetooth off and on, then sync again with the Fitbit close to the phone.

Safety first

Stop and check this first

  • Do not factory reset the Fitbit just to clear this notice unless Fitbit customer support tells you to: a reset erases unsynced data, alarms, goals and notification settings on the device.
  • When restarting a Fitbit, never push paper clips or other objects into the tiny sensor holes such as the microphone or altimeter, since that can damage the watch.

Safe checks you can perform

  • Review Google Health permissions and toggle Bluetooth for 3 seconds
  • Force a manual sync with the Fitbit beside the phone
  • Restart the phone, then restart the Fitbit watch or tracker
  • Disconnect the Fitbit in the app and forget it in Bluetooth

Leave these tasks to a qualified professional

  • Do not attempt this professional task: Check pending updates on the phone, the app and the Fitbit
  • Do not attempt this professional task: Try the sync from another phone and refer to customer support

What a technician must be able to justify

Technician visit

These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.

These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.

  1. Check pending updates on the phone, the app and the Fitbit

What they doThe technician checks that the phone system and Google Health are current and that the Fitbit runs its latest firmware, with the watch charged to at least 50% (the page recommends 75% or more) and the app kept open in the background, because an update can take up to an hour.

They must show youthe installed Google Health version, the watch battery percentage and the progress of the update.

In writingfirmware installed at the end and the sync result afterwards for the Error Code 2 message.

  2. Try the sync from another phone and refer to customer support

What they doIf Error Code 2 persists, and only with your permission, the technician tries syncing your account on another phone or tablet with Bluetooth switched off on the original and, if it still fails, refers the case to Fitbit customer support without opening the device.

They must show youthe sync status on the second phone and your consent to use your account.

In writingtests performed, exact Fitbit model and the case reference opened with Fitbit customer support.

Before accepting a part or repair

Nothing has been shown yet. Do not accept a part swap based on the code alone.

Follow these steps

Note: Follow the documented order. An error code identifies the affected system, but it does not prove by itself which part has failed.

  1. Review Google Health permissions and toggle Bluetooth for 3 seconds

    No special tools

    Who:
you, holding the Android phone that you use with the Fitbit.
    How:
open Settings, tap Apps, Google Health and Permissions; confirm that Location and Nearby devices (Android 12 or later) are on; then turn Bluetooth off for 3 seconds, turn it back on and make sure the phone has cellular data or Wi-Fi.
    Result that matters:
rule out the phone stopping the app from searching for the watch or tracker.
If the sync finishes after the permissions are turned on and the Error Code 2 notice stops coming back:
    solved.
If the Error Code 2 message still appears with the permissions on:
move on to the manual sync.
    Evidence to keep:
screenshot of the Google Health permissions and of Bluetooth switched on.

  2. Force a manual sync with the Fitbit beside the phone

    No special tools

    Who:
you, with the watch or tracker resting next to the phone.
    How:
open the Google Health app, tap Connections at the top left and pull the screen down until the progress bar appears; wait for the bar to fill completely without closing the app. Touching and holding the Today tab and pulling down also works.
    Result that matters:
see whether one complete supervised sync clears the Error Code 2 message.
If the bar fills and the last-synced notice updates:
    the link works again.
If the bar stalls or the error returns:
restart the phone first and then the Fitbit.
    Evidence to keep:
photo of the Connections screen showing the last sync time.

  3. Restart the phone, then restart the Fitbit watch or tracker

    No special tools

    Who:
you; the visiting technician can assist with your permission.
    How:
restart the phone, open Google Health and try to sync; if that is not enough, restart the Fitbit with the method for its series (the Fitbit restart page lists it per model and states that restarting does not erase activity data) and wait for the clock face.
    Result that matters:
reset the software on both ends of the link without touching your data.
If after both restarts the Fitbit syncs normally:
    nothing else is needed.
If the Error Code 2 message returns after both restarts:
go on to disconnect and re-add the device.
    Evidence to keep:
note of the restart method used on your model and of the sync result afterwards.

  4. Disconnect the Fitbit in the app and forget it in Bluetooth

    No special tools

    Who:
you, or the technician together with you and with your explicit permission.
    How:
in Google Health tap Connections, your device and Disconnect device; in the phone Settings open Connected devices or Bluetooth, find the Fitbit, tap the gear icon and Forget; then return to Connections, tap Add device and follow the instructions.
    Result that matters:
clear old connection errors with a brand new pairing.
If the Fitbit pairs again and syncs without showing Error Code 2:
    resolved.
If pairing fails or the error returns:
check pending updates and talk to Fitbit customer support.
    Evidence to keep:
screenshot of the Connections list with the Fitbit added again.

  • Fitbit not syncing with Google Health
  • Fitbit sync Error Code 2
  • Se ha producido un error. Vuelve a intentarlo (código de error 2)
  • Something went wrong. Try again (Error Code 2)

What it means

On the Google Health Help Center page about syncing problems (formerly the Fitbit Help Center), the message 'Something went wrong. Try again (Error Code 2)' is listed among the symptoms of a connection problem between a Fitbit tracker or watch and the phone, next to a device that stopped syncing, stale stats, missing notifications or a wrong time. The page does not tie the message to one part, so the code alone never proves the device is faulty, and other models may differ.

Symptoms and causes

Probable causes · in order

  • App permissions or phone Bluetooth not switched onCommon

Google Health needs Location and Nearby devices (on Android 12 or later) plus a working Bluetooth radio to find the Fitbit, and a missing permission can cut the sync with an error message.

Evidence: Fix syncing issues with Google Health · Restart your Fitbit device · Troubleshoot updating your Fitbit device

  • Battery Saver or Bedtime mode on the phonePossible

Both modes limit background data connectivity, and the page says Fitbit data may only sync once they are turned off or you interact with the device.

Evidence: Fix syncing issues with Google Health · Restart your Fitbit device · Troubleshoot updating your Fitbit device

  • Other phones or Fitbit devices linked to the same accountPossible

The page tells you to uninstall Google Health on other nearby devices signed into your account, unpair them and remove other trackers or watches from the Connections list before retrying.

Evidence: Fix syncing issues with Google Health · Restart your Fitbit device · Troubleshoot updating your Fitbit device

  • Pending updates or a connection with stale errorsPossible

If the phone, the app or the Fitbit itself has an update waiting, or the connection carries old errors, the page suggests updating everything and disconnecting then re-adding the device.
