Quick answer

Your Galaxy has detected water or humidity above a set point in its USB port and blocks cable charging. Unplug the charger, dry the phone with a dry cloth or a fan, and charge again only when the port is completely dry.

Safety first

Stop and check this first

  • Do not put any object into the charging port to dry or clean it: Samsung warns this can damage the port. Shake the phone gently, since excessive force can also damage it.
  • Do not charge the phone while it is wet, and do not handle it, the charger or the cable with wet hands while charging.

Safe checks you can perform

  • Dry the port the way Samsung describes
  • Try another cable in a drier place
  • Update the software and clear the USB Settings cache

Leave these tasks to a qualified professional

  • Do not attempt this professional task: Samsung Support or a Samsung Service Centre

What a technician must be able to justify

Technician visit

These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.

These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.

  1. Samsung Support or a Samsung Service Centre

What they doIf the icon persists after drying, updating and clearing the cache, Samsung Support or a Samsung Service Centre inspects the USB port and the moisture detection.

They must show youthe state of the port after inspection, including any corrosion.

In writingthe diagnosis, any part replaced and the reason.

  2. Port check for corrosion

What they doIf charging keeps failing after the phone got wet, a Samsung Service Centre checks the charging port for corrosion and repairs it.

They must show youthe port before repair, with any corrosion visible.

In writingthe repair done and the reference of any replaced part.

Before accepting a part or repair

Nothing has been shown yet. Do not accept a part swap based on the code alone.

Follow these steps

Note: Follow the documented order. An error code identifies the affected system, but it does not prove by itself which part has failed.

  1. Dry the port the way Samsung describes

    No special tools

    Who:
    you.
    How:
unplug the charger, wipe the phone with a dry cloth or gently shake it 5 to 10 times with the port facing down, then leave it on a cloth in a well ventilated place or in front of a fan. Restart it when the port is completely dry.
    Result that matters:
whether the water drop icon disappears once the port is dry.
    If it disappears:
it was moisture in the port and charging can resume.
If it stays with a dry port after a restart:
go on to the cable and cache checks.
    Evidence to keep:
Time the phone got wet and how long it dried.

  2. Try another cable in a drier place

    No special tools

    Who:
    you.
    How:
once the port is dry, charge with a different dry cable, in a room without steam or condensation. On models that support it you can also charge wirelessly, with the phone centred on the pad.
    Result that matters:
whether cable charging works with the other cable.
    If it works:
the first cable held moisture; let it dry before using it again.
If the icon appears with every cable in a dry room:
    clear the USB Settings cache.
    Evidence to keep:
Which cables and charger you tried.

Evidence: My device displays a water drop icon and will not charge

  3. Update the software and clear the USB Settings cache

    No special tools

    Who:
    you.
    How:
go to Settings > Software update > Download and install. Then Settings > Apps > Filter and sort > Show system apps > USB Settings > Storage > Clear cache, and restart.
    Result that matters:
whether the icon disappears while the port is dry.
    If it disappears:
it was the system error Samsung describes, not moisture.
    If it persists:
contact Samsung Support with the steps you have done.
    Evidence to keep:
Software version and a screenshot of the message.

Evidence: My device displays a water drop icon and will not charge

What it means

Galaxy phones rated IP68 and above check the USB port for moisture. Samsung says that if there is water in the port, or moisture above a set point, charging will not be supported and a water drop icon appears. High humidity or condensation, for example in a kitchen or bathroom, can trigger it even if the phone never touched water, and so can a damp cable. If the icon stays once the phone is dry, Samsung treats it as a system error and has you clear the USB Settings cache. The message alone does not prove the port is damaged.

Symptoms and causes

Probable causes · in order

  • Water in the USB portCommon

The phone was splashed or submerged shortly before. The icon goes away once the port dries; Samsung says water naturally evaporates from the port in about 1 to 2 hours.

  • Humidity or condensationPossible

The phone never touched water but was charging in a humid place such as a kitchen or bathroom. Samsung says high humidity alone can trigger the error.

Evidence: My device displays a water drop icon and will not charge

  • Damp charging cablePossible

The phone is dry but the cable carries moisture. With a different, dry cable the icon does not come back.

Evidence: My device displays a water drop icon and will not charge

  • System error after dryingPossible

The port is completely dry and the phone has been restarted, but the icon persists. Samsung's fix for this case is clearing the USB Settings cache.
