Quick answer

On Bose Smart soundbars, a solid amber light bar means setup mode, ready to connect to Wi-Fi; amber flashing four times is a source error. Finish setup in the Bose app, or open the app to see the details of the error.

Safety first

Stop and check this first

  • Do not open the soundbar over an amber light: Bose links it to setup or a source, which are checked from the app.
  • Before a factory reset, bear in mind it erases all settings and that, if you use Alexa, Bose asks you to remove the soundbar from the Amazon app and your Bose account first.

Safe checks you can perform

  • Check where the amber light is and how it behaves
  • Finish setup in the Bose app
  • If the app does not detect the soundbar during setup
  • Source error: check the app and reset the soundbar

What a technician must be able to justify

Technician visit

These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.

These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.

  1. Case with Bose customer care

What they doIf the soundbar will not leave setup mode after the app, another connection method and a factory reset, or the source error keeps returning, Bose support reviews the case.

They must show youwhich setup step fails and what the source error shows in their systems.

In writingthe case number, the diagnosis and whether repair or replacement applies.

  2. Network check with whoever manages your router

What they doIf the soundbar only connects by cable or on another network, your internet provider or whoever manages the router reviews same name networks, access point or isolation mode and extenders.

They must show youthe networks the router broadcasts, their names and whether isolation or access point mode is on.

In writingwhich settings were changed and on what date.

Before accepting a part or repair

Nothing has been shown yet. Do not accept a part swap based on the code alone.

Follow these steps

Note: Follow the documented order. An error code identifies the affected system, but it does not prove by itself which part has failed.

  1. Check where the amber light is and how it behaves

    No special tools

    Who:
    you, no tools needed.
    How:
check whether the amber is on the front light bar of the soundbar or on the lower rear light of the bass module or a surround speaker receiver. On the soundbar, note whether it stays solid or flashes four times and fades.
    Result that matters:
knowing which meaning in the Bose table applies.
If it is solid amber on the soundbar:
it is in setup mode, continue in the Bose app.
If it flashes four times or it is on the bass module:
check the error in the app or the accessory pairing.
    Evidence to keep:
a short video of the light with the time.

  2. Finish setup in the Bose app

    No special tools

    Who:
you, with your phone next to the soundbar.
    How:
install the Bose app and turn on Bluetooth on your phone. Open the app and allow the Location, Local Network and Bluetooth permissions it asks for: without them, Bose says, the app will not find the product. When the soundbar appears, tap Add, pick your Wi-Fi network, enter the password and tap Connect.
    Result that matters:
the soundbar joining your Wi-Fi and the amber light going away.
    If setup completes:
the soundbar is on your network and in your account.
If the app cannot find the soundbar:
move on to the detection check.
    Evidence to keep:
a screenshot of the app with the soundbar added or of the step where it stops.

  3. If the app does not detect the soundbar during setup

    No special tools

    Who:
you, on your phone and router.
    How:
bring the phone close to the soundbar, turn the phone's Wi-Fi off and on and, on an iPhone, disable Wi-Fi Assist. Close and reopen the app, reboot the phone and unplug the router for 30 seconds. If the router broadcasts several networks with the same name (2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, guest), give them different names, as Bose recommends.
    Result that matters:
the app seeing the soundbar in setup mode.
    If the app finds it:
    finish setup.
    If it still does not:
connect the soundbar to the router with an Ethernet cable or try another Bose connection method.
    Evidence to keep:
a list of what you tried and the network names your router broadcasts.

  4. Source error: check the app and reset the soundbar

    No special tools

    Who:
    you, no tools needed.
    How:
if the amber light flashes four times, open the Bose app to see which source has the error. Then reset: turn the soundbar off, unplug its power cord and those of the bass module or surrounds if present, wait 30 seconds, plug the soundbar back in, wait about 30 seconds and reconnect the accessories.
    Result that matters:
knowing which source fails and whether the warning clears after the reset.
    If the warning clears:
it was a minor issue, as Bose describes for the reset.
If it flashes again with the same source:
note the app message and contact Bose.
    Evidence to keep:
a screenshot of the app message and the time of the reset.

What it means

Bose gives amber two meanings on the light bar of its Smart soundbars. Solid means setup mode: the soundbar is ready to connect to a Wi-Fi network. That is normal when you first plug it in (it blinks for about 30 seconds, then glows amber) and after a factory reset. Flashing four times is a source error, and Bose points to the app for details. Amber on the rear light of the bass module is something else: pairing or disconnected from the soundbar. The light alone never proves the soundbar has a hardware fault.
