Quick answer

A fixed red 12 V battery charge lamp means the battery charging circuit is faulty (dirty terminals, loose or severed alternator belt). With the engine off, clean and tighten the terminals; if the lamp stays on when the engine starts, contact the workshop.

Safety first

Stop and check this first

  • Before touching the battery, protect your eyes and face and work in a well ventilated area with no flames, sparks or smoking: it contains sulphuric acid and can give off explosive gases. Do not disconnect the positive terminal while the engine is running.
  • Never start the engine by connecting a battery charger and never use a 24 V or higher booster. On electric versions do not use the accessory battery to jump-start another vehicle.

Safe checks you can perform

  • Clean and tighten the terminals
  • Check whether the lamp goes off at start-up
  • If the battery is already flat

What a technician must be able to justify

Technician visit

These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.

These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.

  1. Charging circuit test

What they doThe workshop measures battery voltage with the engine off and charging voltage with it running, and checks the alternator belt and the connections.

They must show youthe voltage measured with the engine off and running and the condition of the alternator belt.

In writingthe voltages measured, the part replaced (terminals, belt, alternator or battery), the codes read and whether they were cleared before or after the repair.

  2. Battery replacement on Stop & Start versions

What they doIf the battery must be replaced, Stop & Start versions use a 12 V lead-acid battery with special technology and specifications, which Citroën says only a dealer or qualified workshop should replace.

They must show youthe test of the removed battery that justifies replacing it and the technology type of the new one.

In writingthe battery type fitted, the final charging test and that the lamp goes off with the engine running.

Before accepting a part or repair

Nothing has been shown yet. Do not accept a part swap based on the code alone.

Follow these steps

Note: Follow the documented order. An error code identifies the affected system, but it does not prove by itself which part has failed.

  1. Clean and tighten the terminals

    Tools required

    Who:
you, with the engine off and the ignition switched off.
    How:
open the bonnet with the interior release lever and the exterior safety catch and secure the stay; the battery is under the bonnet. Check that the terminals are correctly tightened (versions without quick-release terminals) and the connections are clean. On this van the negative terminal is not accessible.
    Result that matters:
    clean, firm battery connections.
If a terminal was dirty or loose:
clean it, tighten it and start the engine to see if the lamp goes off.
    If the terminals were fine:
the cause may be the belt or the alternator, contact the workshop.
    Evidence to keep:
photo of the terminals before and after.

The battery contains sulphuric acid and can give off explosive gases: protect your eyes and face, work in a well ventilated area away from flames and sparks, and wash your hands afterwards.

  2. Check whether the lamp goes off at start-up

    No special tools

    Who:
    you, from the driving seat.
    How:
start the engine after checking the terminals and watch the battery charge lamp. A flat battery prevents the engine from starting, so do not delay the workshop visit if the warning stays.
    Result that matters:
knowing whether the circuit is charging the battery again.
    If the lamp goes off:
the fault was in the connections; watch whether it returns.
If the lamp does not go off:
contact a Citroën dealer or a qualified workshop.
    Evidence to keep:
photo of the instrument panel with the engine running.

Evidence: Handbook Citroën Berlingo and Berlingo Van edition 01-21 (en-GB)

  3. If the battery is already flat

    Tools required

    Who:
you, with another 12 V battery or a booster.
    How:
follow the handbook procedure: a backup battery of 12 V nominal and at least equal capacity, vehicles not touching, all electrical consumers off and leads away from moving parts (fan, belt). Once started, let the engine run for at least 30 minutes with the vehicle stationary.
    Result that matters:
restarting and checking whether the lamp goes off.
If it starts and the lamp goes off:
still have the battery and charging checked.
If it starts but the lamp stays on:
the battery is not being charged, contact the workshop.
    Evidence to keep:
note of how it was started and the lamp state afterwards.

Never start the engine by connecting a battery charger and never use a 24 V or higher booster. Connect the black or green lead to the earth point shown in the handbook, not to the negative terminal.

What it means

In the Citroën Berlingo Van handbook (edition 01-21), the red '12 V battery charge' lamp fixed means the battery charging circuit is faulty, for example dirty terminals or a loose or severed alternator belt. Citroën says to clean and tighten the terminals and, if the lamp does not go off when the engine is started, to contact a Citroën dealer or a qualified workshop. Other models and versions may differ. The lamp alone does not prove that a part is faulty.

Symptoms and causes

Probable causes · in order

  • Dirty or loose terminalsCommon

The handbook gives dirty terminals as an example of a charging circuit fault and asks you to check regularly that they are tight and clean.

Evidence: Handbook Citroën Berlingo and Berlingo Van edition 01-21 (en-GB)

  • Loose or severed alternator beltPossible

Citroën gives a loose or severed alternator belt as another example of a battery charging circuit fault.

Evidence: Handbook Citroën Berlingo and Berlingo Van edition 01-21 (en-GB)

  • Other charging circuit faultPossible

If the lamp does not go off at start-up after cleaning and tightening the terminals, the handbook refers you to a dealer or qualified workshop to find the cause.
