AdBlue range
Peugeot AdBlue range warning in car: top up the tank soon

Risk level
Medium
Proceed carefully and stop if the check is unclear.
Urgency
Medium
Quick answer
The AdBlue lamp warns that the tank has dropped below the reserve (2,400 km of range or less) on a Peugeot BlueHDi diesel. It is not a fault: top up with ISO 22241 AdBlue soon, because at 0 km the engine will not restart.
Safety first
Stop and check this first
- Never disable, bypass or tamper with the AdBlue or SCR system: Peugeot says that with a faulty SCR system the car no longer meets the Euro 6 standard. Never pour AdBlue into the Diesel tank or dilute it with water.
- AdBlue is a urea-based solution. On skin, wash with soap and running water; in the eyes, rinse with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention if irritation persists. Do not inhale the vapour and never store containers in the car.
Safe checks you can perform
- Read the remaining range
- Top up with the right AdBlue
- Starting after running out of AdBlue
Leave these tasks to a qualified professional
- Do not attempt this professional task: Diagnosis if the alert stays after topping up
- Do not attempt this professional task: Top-up when the car is already immobilised
What a technician must be able to justify
Technician visit
These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.
These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.
Diagnosis if the alert stays after topping up
What they doThe workshop reads the SCR system fault memory and checks whether the AdBlue tank level sender registers the top-up.
They must show youthe fault memory readout (stored and pending codes) and the AdBlue range read by the tester.
In writingthe codes found, the part checked or replaced and whether codes were cleared before or after the repair.
Top-up when the car is already immobilised
What they doIf the car will not start because the tank is empty and you cannot top up yourself, the dealer or qualified workshop adds AdBlue and checks the start.
They must show youthe litres of ISO 22241 AdBlue added and the range shown on the panel afterwards.
In writinglitres added, the fluid standard, the final range and that no part of the SCR system was disabled.
Before accepting a part or repair
Nothing has been shown yet. Do not accept a part swap based on the code alone.
Follow these steps
Note: Follow the documented order. An error code identifies the affected system, but it does not prove by itself which part has failed.
Read the remaining range
- Who:
- you, with the car stationary.
- How:
- switch on the ignition and read the range message on the instrument panel. Above 2,400 km it is not shown automatically, but with the matrix or digital panel you can view it with the 'Check' button in the Driving/Vehicle touch screen menu.
- Result that matters:
- knowing your band: 2,400 to 800 km, 800 to 100 km, under 100 km or starting prevented.
- If more than 100 km remain:
- top up as soon as you can; Peugeot recommends doing so from the first reserve alert.
- If the message says starting is prevented:
- you must add at least 5 litres before the engine will start.
- Evidence to keep:
- photo of the range message and the lit lamp.

Top up with the right AdBlue
- Who:
- you, at a service station or with a container.
- How:
- park on a flat, level surface. Use only AdBlue meeting ISO 22241, never diluted with water or transferred to another container. Turn the blue cap anticlockwise; with containers add between 10 and 13 litres, at a pump stop after the first automatic cut-out. In winter the vehicle must be above -11 °C or the AdBlue may be frozen.
- Result that matters:
- a top-up of at least 5 litres, the minimum the system registers.
- If the alert goes off:
- it was only a level warning.
- If the alert stays after adding 5 litres or more:
- go to a Peugeot dealer or a qualified workshop.
- Evidence to keep:
- receipt or container showing the expiry date and litres added.
Evidence: Handbook Peugeot 208 edition 01-20 (en-GB)
Starting after running out of AdBlue
- Who:
- you, at the immobilised car after topping up.
- How:
- after a top-up following a breakdown due to lack of AdBlue, wait around 5 minutes without opening the driver's door, unlocking, inserting the key or bringing the Keyless Entry and Starting key into the cabin. Then switch on the ignition, wait 10 seconds and start the engine.
- Result that matters:
- the system registering the top-up and allowing a start.
- If the engine starts:
- check that the range message no longer warns.
- If it does not start:
- contact a Peugeot dealer or a qualified workshop.
- Evidence to keep:
- note of the litres added, the time of the top-up and the message shown.

What it means
In the Peugeot 208 handbook (edition 01-20), the AdBlue (BlueHDi) lamp comes on at ignition when the AdBlue range drops below 2,400 km and the panel shows the remaining distance: on for about 30 seconds between 2,400 and 800 km, fixed with an audible signal between 800 and 100 km and flashing below 100 km. With an empty tank the legally required immobiliser prevents starting. It is different from 'Emissions control fault', which reports an SCR system fault. Other models may differ. The lamp alone does not prove that a part is faulty.

Symptoms and causes
Probable causes · in order
- Normal consumption down to the reserveCommon
AdBlue is used up as you drive: the tank of about 15 litres gives about 6,500 km and the alert appears when the reserve level is reached.
Evidence: Handbook Peugeot 208 edition 01-20 (en-GB)
- Top-up too smallPossible
Peugeot says the system only registers AdBlue top-ups of 5 litres or more; with less, the alert and the range may not change.
Evidence: Handbook Peugeot 208 edition 01-20 (en-GB)
- Actually an SCR system faultLess common
If the AdBlue lamp flashes with the engine self-diagnostic lamp fixed, the handbook treats it as an SCR emissions fault, not a lack of fluid.
