Quick answer

The 'Keycard Battery Low' message on a Renault means the hands-free card battery is running down. Replace it as the manual describes and press a card button four times near the car; until then you can start by placing the card on its zone.

Safety first

Stop and check this first

  • Keep new and used batteries out of reach of children and never swallow them: Renault warns of a risk of chemical burns that may lead to death. If one is swallowed, see a doctor as soon as possible.
  • Insert the battery the right way round, as the manual warns of a risk of explosion, and never leave the card inside the car when you walk away.

Safe checks you can perform

  • Replace the battery as the manual shows
  • Press four times beside the car
  • Start by placing the card on its zone
  • Open and lock with the built-in key

What a technician must be able to justify

Technician visit

These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.

These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.

  1. Card check at the dealer

What they doIf the message stays after the battery change, the approved dealer checks the battery, the card and that the vehicle recognises it properly.

They must show youthe battery type fitted, its measured voltage and the access system fault memory readout, if any codes are stored.

In writingthe battery replaced, the measurement taken, the codes found and whether they were cleared before or after the work.

  2. New card and initialisation

What they doIf the card is damaged or lost, the dealer supplies another and initialises the system with the vehicle and all its cards.

They must show youthe number of cards the vehicle recognises after initialisation.

In writingthe cards initialised, any cards cancelled and the date of the work.

Before accepting a part or repair

Nothing has been shown yet. Do not accept a part swap based on the code alone.

Follow these steps

Note: Follow the documented order. An error code identifies the affected system, but it does not prove by itself which part has failed.

  1. Replace the battery as the manual shows

    No special tools

    Who:
you, with the card in hand and a battery of the same or equivalent type.
    How:
slide the rear casing downwards while pressing on area A, remove the battery cover, take the battery out by pressing on one side and lifting the other, and fit the new one following the direction and template inside the cover. Do not touch the electronic circuit or contacts, and check that the cover clips shut.
    Result that matters:
the card with a new battery, the right way round and the cover closed.
    If the cover clips shut:
move on to the pairing step near the car.
If the cover does not close properly:
do not use that card, keep it away from children and consult an approved dealer.
    Evidence to keep:
photo of the removed battery with its printed reference and of the new one fitted.

Evidence: Renault Clio 5 user manual (17/03/2025 to 14/09/2025): Card

  2. Press four times beside the car

    No special tools

    Who:
you, standing next to the vehicle with the card.
    How:
after closing the card, press any of its buttons four times while staying close to the car. Start the vehicle normally next time and look at the instrument panel.
    Result that matters:
the low battery message disappearing at the next start.
If the message no longer appears:
the battery change has been registered.
    If the message keeps appearing:
recheck the battery type and orientation and, if both are right, consult an approved dealer.
    Evidence to keep:
photo of the panel without the message after starting.

Evidence: Renault Clio 5 user manual (17/03/2025 to 14/09/2025): Card

  3. Start by placing the card on its zone

    No special tools

    Who:
you, inside the car, if the card is not detected before the battery is changed.
    How:
if 'Place card on zone + START' appears, press the brake or clutch pedal, place the card, button side, on the placement area shown in the manual and press the start button. The message goes out once the engine starts.
    Result that matters:
being able to start even with an almost flat battery.
    If the engine starts:
replace the battery as soon as you can.
    If it does not start:
make sure no phones or other devices are near the card, as they can interfere, and try again.
    Evidence to keep:
note of the message shown and whether starting worked.

Evidence: Renault Clio 5 user manual (17/03/2025 to 14/09/2025): Ignition-starter switch on a vehicle with card

  4. Open and lock with the built-in key

    No special tools

    Who:
you, outside the car, if the card no longer unlocks remotely.
    How:
slide the rear casing to take out the built-in key, insert its tip into the notch at the bottom of the cover on the driver's door lock, lift the cover off and unlock with the key. To lock without the card, with the ignition off and a door open, hold the interior locking switch for more than five seconds and close the door.
    Result that matters:
getting into the car and leaving it locked without relying on the battery.
If the door opens with the key:
put the key back in the card once inside.
    If you cannot open it:
ask an approved dealer for help instead of forcing the lock.
    Evidence to keep:
note of the procedure you used and whether it worked.

What it means

In the Renault Clio 5 online user manual (edition 17/03/2025 to 14/09/2025), the 'Keycard Battery Low' message appears on the instrument panel when the card battery needs replacing, and Renault puts its service life at about two years. Even with a very weak battery, the manual says you can still start the car and lock or unlock it using the emergency procedures. Other Renault manuals may vary, and the Keycard Battery Low message does not by itself prove that the hands-free card or the Clio's receiver is faulty.
