Risk level

Medium

Urgency

High

Quick answer

On the Renault Trafic, 'Top Up AdBlue before 2400 km' or 'before 1200 km' means AdBlue range is getting low. Refill soon with ISO 22241 reagent: if it reaches '0 MILES (0 KM) lockout fill AdBlue', the engine will not start until you fill the tank.

Safety first

Stop and check this first

  • Do not let it reach '0 MILES (0 KM) lockout fill AdBlue': the engine will not start until the reagent tank is filled. Renault warns of a risk of immobilisation of the vehicle.
  • The reagent must not come into contact with eyes or skin: if it does, wash with plenty of cold water and see a doctor if necessary. Ammonium hydroxide vapour may escape from the cap when the tank is hot. Do not tamper with or disable the system: Renault allows only qualified personnel from its network to work on it.

Safe checks you can perform

  • Refill the AdBlue tank
  • Make the system register the fill
  • In frost: frozen reagent

Leave these tasks to a qualified professional

  • Do not attempt this professional task: Reagent refill at the workshop
  • Do not attempt this professional task: SCR system check if the warning stays

What a technician must be able to justify

Technician visit

These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.

These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.

  1. Reagent refill at the workshop

What they doIf you cannot fill it yourself (extreme cold, no container at hand), an approved dealer can refill the reagent tank, as the manual states for each range message.

They must show youthe ISO 22241 reagent used and the instrument panel with the message gone.

In writinglitres added, the reagent standard and the van's mileage.

  2. SCR system check if the warning stays

What they doIf warnings stay after filling with correct AdBlue and waiting 10 seconds, or 'AdBlue quality to check' or 'AdBlue injection to check' appears, the Renault workshop checks the reagent system.

They must show youthe fault memory readout (stored and pending codes) and the reagent level reading after the fill.

In writingthe codes read, any part replaced and whether codes were cleared before or after the repair.

Before accepting a part or repair

Nothing has been shown yet. Do not accept a part swap based on the code alone.

Follow these steps

Note: Follow the documented order. An error code identifies the affected system, but it does not prove by itself which part has failed.

  1. Refill the AdBlue tank

    No special tools

    Who:
you, with the engine stopped (not just on Stop and Start standby) and the ignition off.
    How:
open the front left-hand door, open the flap and loosen the cap. Use only reagent that complies with ISO 22241 and the mark on the filler cap. You can fill at the pump or from a container after reading its instructions. Useable capacity is about 22 to 25 litres depending on the vehicle.
    Result that matters:
a full tank with cap and cover properly closed.
If reagent overflows or gets on the paint:
clean it quickly with plenty of cold water and a soft cloth (use a soft sponge if it crystallises).
If you cannot fill it yourself:
have an approved dealer refill the reagent tank, as the manual allows.
    Evidence to keep:
photo of the message before filling and the receipt showing ISO 22241 AdBlue.

Evidence: Renault Trafic user manual (15/07/2025 to 28/02/2026): Reagent tank

  2. Make the system register the fill

    No special tools

    Who:
you, in the driver's seat with the van stationary.
    How:
after filling, check that the cap and cover are closed, start the engine and wait 10 seconds with the vehicle stationary and the engine on before setting off, as Renault instructs.
    Result that matters:
the 'Fill AdBlue' message and the warning lights disappear.
    If they disappear:
it was only a low level warning and it is solved.
If you skipped the 10 second wait:
the fill is registered after several dozen minutes of driving; if warnings remain after that, ask the Renault network to check it.
    Evidence to keep:
note of date, mileage and litres added.

Evidence: Renault Trafic user manual (15/07/2025 to 28/02/2026): Reagent tank

  3. In frost: frozen reagent

    No special tools

    Who:
you, when outside temperatures are very low.
    How:
the reagent freezes below approximately -10°C. Do not try to fill while it is frozen: park in a warmer area (above about -10°C), wait about eight hours for it to become liquid, then fill. In frosty weather Renault says to refill as soon as 'TOP UP AdBlue before 1200 km' appears.
    Result that matters:
refilling without forcing the system or getting stranded.
If you cannot follow the procedure:
have an accredited professional top up the reagent.
If below about -20°C 'Check injection' appears with warning lights:
Renault says this is not necessarily a fault; if it persists once the reagent is liquid, contact the Renault network as soon as possible.
    Evidence to keep:
outside temperature and time of the warning.

Evidence: Renault Trafic user manual (15/07/2025 to 28/02/2026): Reagent tank

What it means

In the Renault Trafic user manual (edition 15/07/2025 to 28/02/2026), 'Top Up AdBlue before 2400 km' is shown at ignition when less than 2,400 km of reagent range remains, and 'TOP UP AdBlue before 1200 km' between 1,200 and 800 km. Below that it becomes 'XXX MILES (XXX KM) lockout fill AdBlue' and at 0 km the engine will not start until the tank is filled. It is a level warning, not a fault. Other models (Master, Kangoo) may use different wording. The message alone does not prove that a part is faulty.

Symptoms and causes

Probable causes · in order

  • Normal reagent consumptionCommon

AdBlue is used up by the SCR diesel engine; Renault says real-time consumption depends on usage conditions, equipment fitted and driving style.

Evidence: Renault Trafic user manual (15/07/2025 to 28/02/2026): Reagent tank

  • Refill not registered yetPossible

If you do not wait 10 seconds stationary with the engine on after filling, the system may take several dozen minutes of driving to register the fill and the message stays.

Evidence: Renault Trafic user manual (15/07/2025 to 28/02/2026): Reagent tank

  • Reagent frozen in extreme coldPossible

The reagent freezes below approximately -10°C; do not fill while it is frozen and wait for it to return to liquid, about eight hours in a warmer area.
