Quick answer

The red oil pressure light means engine oil pressure is too low. SEAT says: do not drive on, switch off the engine and check the oil level. If the level is correct, do not restart and get help.

Safety first

What to do now

  • Stop immediately

Who: you, as soon as the light comes on. How: stop the car somewhere safe and switch off the engine. Result that matters: that the engine stops turning as soon as possible. If you stopped straight away: possible damage is limited; go on to the level check. If you kept driving: tell the workshop how far you drove with the light on. Evidence to keep: photo of the light, time and approximate distance driven with it on.

  • Oil level on the dipstick

Who: you, engine off and car on level ground. How: wait a few minutes, pull the dipstick, wipe it, reinsert it and read the mark. Result that matters: whether the level is below minimum. If it is low: top up with the oil the manual specifies and check whether the light goes out after starting. If it is correct: SEAT says not to leave the engine running, even at idle; call assistance. Evidence to keep: photo of the dipstick showing the level.

  • Visible leaks under the car

Who: you, looking at the ground under the engine without crawling underneath. How: look for fresh oil spots where it was parked or where you stopped. Result that matters: whether there is a visible leak. If there is a fresh spot: oil is being lost; do not start and tell the workshop. If there is no spot: consumption or a pressure fault is not ruled out; the workshop decides. Evidence to keep: photo of the spot and the place.

What you must never do

  • Do not attempt this professional task: Mechanical oil pressure test
  • Do not attempt this professional task: Check sensor, filter and oil

What a technician must be able to justify

Technician visit

These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.

These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.

  1. Mechanical oil pressure test

What they doThe technician fits a gauge in place of the pressure sensor and measures real pressure at idle and at higher rpm with the engine warm.

They must show youthe pressure measured at each engine speed against the manufacturer specification.

In writingthe measured pressure, the cause found and whether the engine was damaged.

  2. Check sensor, filter and oil

What they doIf mechanical pressure is correct, the technician checks the sensor and its connector; if it is low, they check the filter, oil type and condition before considering the pump.

They must show youa photo of the sensor and connector, or of the drained oil and removed filter.

In writingwhich part is replaced, its reference and a final test with the light off.

What it means

In the SEAT Arona manual, the red oil light means engine oil pressure is too low. Without enough pressure the engine is not lubricated properly. SEAT separates two cases: if oil is low, top up with the correct oil; if the level is correct and the light keeps flashing, the engine must not be left running, not even at idle. The light does not say why pressure dropped: the workshop determines that.
