Quick answer

Cointra F09 means the overheat protection has tripped because water is not circulating or there is air. Check the gauge when cold: if it is below 0.8 bar, refill to 1 bar with the filling key and wait for it to clear by itself.

Safety first

Stop and check this first

  • If you smell gas, do not reset or press anything electrical: open windows, close the gas tap if it is within reach, leave the home and call your gas distributor's emergency number from the street. Cointra says to switch a faulty boiler off and have it repaired only by an authorised technician.
  • Refill only with the filling key and close it afterwards, as Cointra describes. Do not open the boiler or touch the pump: internal bleeding and the pump check are the technician's job.

Safe checks you can perform

  • Gas or flue gas smell near the boiler
  • Pressure on the gauge with the system cold
  • Refilling with the filling key
  • See whether F09 clears by itself
  • Pump, system and bleeding by the technician

What a technician must be able to justify

Technician visit

These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.

These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.

  1. Circulation pump check

What they doThe technician checks that the pump runs and moves the water, using pump speed P10 in the information menu.

They must show youthe P10 reading with the boiler running.

In writingthe pump condition and, if replaced, its part reference.

  2. System check and bleeding

What they doChecks the heating system to see whether water circulates and bleeds the air from the boiler and pipes.

They must show youwhere air came out or what stopped the flow.

In writingwhat was bled and the final pressure.

  3. Fault history reading

What they doReads the last eight stored faults in the Service menu to see whether F09 repeats or comes with other codes.

They must show youthe history list.

In writingthe codes read and their order.

Before accepting a part or repair

Nothing has been shown yet. Do not accept a part swap based on the code alone.

Follow these steps

Note: Follow the documented order. An error code identifies the affected system, but it does not prove by itself which part has failed.

  1. Gas or flue gas smell near the boiler

    No special tools

    Who:
    you.
    How:
walk up without pressing switches or turning lights on and notice whether there is a smell of gas or combustion fumes.
    Result that matters:
whether there is a smell or not.
    If there is a smell:
do not touch the boiler and follow the gas warning on this page.
    If there is no smell:
go on to read the pressure gauge.
    Evidence to keep:
the time and what you noticed.

Evidence: Cointra SUPERLATIVE SUPRA C, instrucciones de uso, instalación y mantenimiento (cod. 3541V210)

  2. Pressure on the gauge with the system cold

    No special tools

    Who:
    you.
    How:
with the heating cold, look at the gauge on the front of the boiler without opening anything.
    Result that matters:
whether it reads about 1 bar or below 0.8 bar.
If it reads below 0.8 bar:
Cointra says it must be restored; go to the next step.
If it reads about 1 bar:
lack of water becomes less likely; circulation or air become more likely.
    Evidence to keep:
a photo of the gauge and of the display showing F09.

Evidence: Cointra SUPERLATIVE SUPRA C, instrucciones de uso, instalación y mantenimiento (cod. 3541V210)

  3. Refilling with the filling key

    No special tools

    Who:
    you.
    How:
pull out the filling key and turn it anticlockwise until the gauge is back at 1 bar, as Cointra describes. Always close it when you finish.
    Result that matters:
whether the pressure reaches 1 bar and the boiler runs the 300 second Fh bleed cycle.
If Fh shows and then it works without F09:
    note the refill date.
If the pressure soon drops again:
there is a water leak: call the technician.
    Evidence to keep:
the pressure before and after and the date.

Evidence: Cointra SUPERLATIVE SUPRA C, instrucciones de uso, instalación y mantenimiento (cod. 3541V210)

  4. See whether F09 clears by itself

    No special tools

    Who:
    you.
    How:
do not press anything and let the boiler cool: Cointra says F faults clear by themselves once values are back to normal.
    Result that matters:
whether F09 clears and how often it returns.
If it clears and does not return:
    note the day and time.
If it returns often with the right pressure:
the pump or the system are suspect: call the technician.
    Evidence to keep:
    the times the code appeared.

Evidence: Cointra SUPERLATIVE SUPRA C, instrucciones de uso, instalación y mantenimiento (cod. 3541V210)

  5. Pump, system and bleeding by the technician

    Tools required

    Who:
    authorised technician.
    How:
reads the water pressure and pump speed in the information menu, checks the circulation pump and the system and bleeds the air.
    Result that matters:
whether the water circulates and whether air remains.
If the pump does not move the water:
that cause is confirmed and it is repaired or replaced.
    If air came out:
it is bled and refilled to the right pressure.
    Evidence to keep:
a report with the pressure, the pump speed read and what was repaired.

The pump and internal air vents are inside the casing, with mains voltage. Cointra leaves repairs to authorised technicians.

What it means

In the Superlative Supra C fault table, F09 is the overheat protection tripping. Cointra gives two causes: no water circulating in the system, with the remedy of checking the circulation pump and the system, and air in the system, with the remedy of bleeding it. The letter F is a transient lockout that clears by itself once the temperature is back to normal. The code does not say whether water is not circulating because of the pump, the system or air.

Symptoms and causes

Probable causes · in order

  • Water not circulating in the systemPossible

This is the first cause Cointra gives, with the instruction to check the pump and the heating system. It fits if the radiators stay cold while the boiler heats up.

  • Air in the systemPossible

Cointra lists it with the remedy of bleeding the air. It fits if the pressure was low, the system was refilled recently or you hear gurgling.
