Cointra F41 on a gas boiler: maximum Delta T protection

Risk level
Medium
Proceed carefully and stop if the check is unclear.
Urgency
Medium
Quick answer
Cointra F41 warns that the maximum DELTA T protection has acted. It is a temporary lockout that clears by itself. Meanwhile, check the gauge when cold and top up to 1 bar if below 0.8 bar; if F41 repeats, call the technician.
Safety first
Stop and check this first
- Even though F41 is a water side warning, a gas smell comes first: do not switch anything on or off, ventilate, close the gas tap if you can reach it, leave and call the gas emergency line from outside. Cointra says to switch the boiler off when it fails.
- If F41 repeats every day, do not ignore it just because it clears: the Cointra table links it to circulation, air or sensors that need checking.
Safe checks you can perform

What a technician must be able to justify
Technician visit
These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.
These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.
Flow and return sensor comparison
What they doIn the Information menu, the technician reads the heating and return NTC sensor temperatures side by side and checks the position and operation of each.
They must show youboth readings on the display.
In writingthe values measured against the manufacturer's specification and which sensor was worked on.
Circulation and bleeding
What they doThe technician checks that the pump is not seized, reads its current speed in the Information menu and bleeds the air from the system.
They must show youthe pump running and the system bled.
In writingwhat was found and what was corrected.
Before accepting a part or repair
Nothing has been shown yet. Do not accept a part swap based on the code alone.
Follow these steps
Note: Follow the documented order. An error code identifies the affected system, but it does not prove by itself which part has failed.
Whether F41 clears by itself
- Who:
- you.
- How:
- press nothing for a few minutes and watch the display; Cointra explains that F faults clear by themselves once the value is back to normal.
- Result that matters:
- whether F41 goes away and the boiler heats again.
- If it goes away:
- note the time and what the boiler was doing, heating or hot water.
- If it stays or keeps coming back:
- there is a cause that does not clear itself; go on to the gauge.
- Evidence to keep:
- the time and how often it appears.

System pressure
- Who:
- you.
- How:
- with the system cold, read the gauge. The fill pressure should be around 1 bar and Cointra says to restore it if it drops below 0.8 bar.
- Result that matters:
- the pressure value.
- If it is below 0.8 bar:
- use the filling key, turn it anticlockwise up to 1 bar and close it when done.
- If it is correct:
- pressure does not explain F41; the technician should look at sensors and circulation.
- Evidence to keep:
- a photo of the gauge.

Noises and radiators
- Who:
- you.
- How:
- with the heating on, listen for gurgling in pipes or radiators and notice whether the radiators at the far end stay cold.
- Result that matters:
- signs of air or of water barely circulating.
- If there is gurgling or the far radiators are cold:
- tell the technician; it fits with air or low flow.
- If everything heats evenly and quietly:
- the sensors become more likely.
- Evidence to keep:
- a note of what you heard and which radiators fail.

Sensors, circulator and bleeding by the technician
- Who:
- authorised technician.
- How:
- compares the heating and return sensor readings, checks the position and operation of both, checks the circulator and bleeds the system.
- Result that matters:
- whether the temperature difference is real or created by a sensor.
- If a sensor reads out of line:
- its position is corrected or it is replaced.
- If the sensors read correctly:
- the problem is circulation or air.
- Evidence to keep:
- a report with readings and work done.
Sensors and circulator are inside the boiler. Cointra says repairs and part replacement are for an authorised technician only.

What it means
In the Superlative Plus table, F41 is the maximum DELTA T protection acting. The boiler watches the difference between the heating sensor temperature and the return sensor temperature; if it gets too large, it cuts out to protect itself. Cointra gives four causes: either sensor faulty, no water circulating or air in the system. F faults clear by themselves when the value returns to its range, with no reset. The code does not separate a circulation problem from a wrong reading.

Symptoms and causes
Probable causes · in order
- Faulty heating sensorPossible
Cointra says to check the position and operation of the heating sensor. A high flow reading mimics an excessive difference from the return.

- Faulty return sensorPossible
Cointra asks for the same check on the return sensor. A low return reading also widens the difference without anything wrong with the water.
Evidence: Cointra SUPERLATIVE PLUS 24 C, instrucciones de uso, instalación y mantenimiento
- Low flow from the circulatorPossible
Cointra says to check the circulator. If water moves slowly, it leaves very hot and comes back cold, and the real difference grows.

- Air in the systemPossible
Cointra says to bleed the air. Air pockets hold back the water; it fits after topping up or if the pipes are noisy.
