Gree H5 on an air conditioner: IPM module protection

Risk level
Medium
Proceed carefully and stop if the check is unclear.
Urgency
Medium
Quick answer
H5 is the protection of the IPM module on the outdoor board, which drives the compressor. In cooling the compressor stops and the indoor fan keeps running; in heating everything stops. Cut the power, clean the filter, clear the outdoor unit without opening it and call a technician.
Safety first
Stop and check this first
- Gree asks you not to repair the unit yourself and to call a licensed HVAC technician. If the power cord overheats, there is abnormal noise, the breaker trips frequently, there is a burning smell or the indoor unit leaks, turn it off and disconnect the power immediately.
- Do not open the outdoor unit. Gree's service manual requires waiting at least 20 minutes after cutting the power, or measuring the capacitor below 20 V, before touching the outdoor board: it is work for a certified technician.
Safe checks you can perform
- Code on the indoor unit display
- Clean filter and clear outdoor unit
- Measurements from Gree's H5/P5 procedure
Leave these tasks to a qualified professional
- Do not attempt this professional task: Follow the H5 diagram before replacing parts
- Do not attempt this professional task: Correct the refrigerant charge if needed
What a technician must be able to justify
Technician visit
These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.
These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.
Follow the H5 diagram before replacing parts
What they doThe technician measures the supply, checks heat radiation and pressure, and tests the compressor before replacing the board or the compressor.
They must show youthe voltage between L and N, the resistances across the compressor terminals and to the pipe, and the system pressure.
In writingthe code, all measurements, the part replaced and why, and the date.
Correct the refrigerant charge if needed
What they doIf the pressure is high from too much refrigerant, the technician recovers the charge and sets it to the nameplate value.
They must show youthe pressures in the operating mode where H5 appears and the leak test with a detector and its result.
In writingrefrigerant recovered and charged (kg and type R410A), leak test result and date.
Before accepting a part or repair
Nothing has been shown yet. Do not accept a part swap based on the code alone.
Follow these steps
Note: Follow the documented order. An error code identifies the affected system, but it does not prove by itself which part has failed.
Code on the indoor unit display
- Who:
- you.
- How:
- look at the indoor unit display: Gree shows the error code on the temperature indicator (dual 8). Also note whether the unit was in cooling or heating, because Gree describes a different stop in each mode.
- Result that matters:
- that the code is H5 and which mode it appeared in.
- If it is H5:
- IPM module protection; continue with this page.
- If it is a different code:
- this page does not apply; look up that code.
- Evidence to keep:
- a photo of the display with the code, date, time and operating mode.

Clean filter and clear outdoor unit
- Who:
- you.
- How:
- turn the unit off and disconnect the power before cleaning, as Gree asks. Clean the air filter following the owner's manual and check that the outdoor unit's air inlet and outlet are not covered by objects; remove whatever covers it without opening it.
- Result that matters:
- ruling out poor heat radiation, one of the points Gree checks for H5.
- If the filter was very dirty or the outdoor unit was covered:
- note it and tell the technician, even if H5 does not return.
- If everything was clean and clear:
- the remaining checks are electrical or on the refrigerant circuit, and belong to the technician.
- Evidence to keep:
- photos of the filter and the outdoor unit before and after, and the date.

Measurements from Gree's H5/P5 procedure
- Who:
- certified HVAC technician.
- How:
- measure the voltage between L and N on the terminal board with the unit running, check heat exchangers, fans and system pressure, and with the power cut and the capacitor discharged check the compressor U, V, W wiring, the resistance across its three terminals and the insulation to the copper pipe.
- Result that matters:
- whether the fault is in the supply, heat radiation, the circuit or the compressor.
- If the compressor insulation resistance is not above 500 ohm:
- Gree says to replace the compressor.
- If supply, circuit and compressor are fine:
- Gree says to replace the outdoor control board.
- Evidence to keep:
- a report with the voltage measured, the compressor resistances and the system pressure.
Mains voltage, a charged capacitor and pressurised R410A refrigerant: certified technician only.

What it means
In Gree's service manual for the Sapphire SAP18 and SAP24HP230V1AH, H5 is the module (IPM) protection. In cooling and drying the compressor stops while the indoor fan runs; in heating the complete unit stops. Gree groups it with compressor phase overcurrent and loss of synchronism, and has the technician check the compressor terminals, the supply voltage, the compressor, the refrigerant charge and the air inlet and outlet of both units. The code alone never proves that a part is faulty, and other models may differ.

Symptoms and causes
Probable causes · in order
- Supply voltage out of rangePossible
Gree's procedure starts by measuring the voltage between L and N on the terminal board, which should be 210 to 250 VAC; outside that range the supply is corrected.
Evidence: Gree Sapphire installation, service and troubleshooting manual, SAP18HP230V1AH/AO and SAP24HP230V1AH/AO
- Poor heat radiation or dirty heat exchangersPossible
Gree asks whether the indoor or outdoor heat exchangers are dirty or the unit is covered by objects that stop it shedding heat.
Evidence: Gree Sapphire installation, service and troubleshooting manual, SAP18HP230V1AH/AO and SAP24HP230V1AH/AO
- High pressure or too much refrigerantPossible
Gree lists system pressure that is too high, for example from too much refrigerant, among the causes to correct before replacing parts.
Evidence: Gree Sapphire installation, service and troubleshooting manual, SAP18HP230V1AH/AO and SAP24HP230V1AH/AO
- Compressor wiring or windingsPossible
Gree checks the compressor U, V, W wiring against the diagram, that the resistances between terminals are almost equal and the insulation to the pipe.
Evidence: Gree Sapphire installation, service and troubleshooting manual, SAP18HP230V1AH/AO and SAP24HP230V1AH/AO
- Outdoor control boardPossible
If everything above is fine and the unit still does not run, Gree's diagram ends by replacing the outdoor control board.
