Risk level

Medium

Proceed carefully and stop if the check is unclear.

Urgency

Low

Quick answer

Vanguard needs TPM 2.0 and UEFI firmware to use Virtualization-based Security (VBS) and does not detect that setup (VAN 9005). Before touching the BIOS, check the TPM version in tpm.msc and BIOS Mode, Secure Boot and VBS in msinfo32.

Safety first

Stop and check this first

  • Do not use tools that emulate a TPM or claim to bypass Vanguard: Riot only documents enabling the PC's real features. Penalties or account issues go to Riot support.
  • Riot warns that switching to UEFI without first converting the disk from MBR to GPT stops Windows from booting. If you do not know the BIOS, leave these changes to a professional.

Safe checks you can perform

  • TPM status
  • BIOS Mode and Secure Boot
  • Virtualization-based Security and Memory Integrity
  • BitLocker recovery key before touching the BIOS

Leave these tasks to a qualified professional

  • Do not attempt this professional task: BIOS or UEFI changes by a technician or the maker
  • Do not attempt this professional task: Riot Player Support with logs

What a technician must be able to justify

Technician visit

These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.

These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.

  1. BIOS or UEFI changes by a technician or the maker

What they doThe technician or the PC or motherboard maker's service enables fTPM or PTT, Secure Boot and virtualization (VT-x or SVM) per its manual, and converts the disk to GPT if it was Legacy.

They must show youtpm.msc and msinfo32 with TPM 2.0, Secure Boot on and VBS running.

In writingwhich settings were changed and whether the disk was converted.

  2. Riot Player Support with logs

What they doIf TPM 2.0, Secure Boot and Memory Integrity are all fine and VAN 9005 remains, Riot support reviews the logs.

They must show youthe ticket number.

In writingthe three checks confirmed and Riot's reply.

Before accepting a part or repair

Nothing has been shown yet. Do not accept a part swap based on the code alone.

Follow these steps

Note: Follow the documented order. An error code identifies the affected system, but it does not prove by itself which part has failed.

  1. TPM status

    No special tools

    Who:
    you.
    How:
press Windows+R, type tpm.msc and press Enter. Look at the status message and the specification version.
    Result that matters:
that it says "The TPM is ready for use" with specification 2.0.
If it is ready and 2.0:
the TPM is ruled out; move on to Secure Boot.
If it is not found or is 1.2:
fTPM or PTT must be enabled in the BIOS; leave this step to a technician if you do not know the BIOS.
    Evidence to keep:
a screenshot of the tpm.msc window.

    Evidence: Enable TPM 2.0

  2. BIOS Mode and Secure Boot

    No special tools

    Who:
    you.
    How:
press Windows+R, type msinfo32 and find BIOS Mode and Secure Boot State.
    Result that matters:
that the mode is UEFI and Secure Boot is On.
If it is UEFI and off:
Secure Boot only needs enabling in the BIOS following the PC maker.
    If it is Legacy:
do not switch to UEFI without converting the disk to GPT first or Windows will not boot; leave it to a technician.
    Evidence to keep:
a screenshot of msinfo32 with those two fields.

    Evidence: Secure Boot

  3. Virtualization-based Security and Memory Integrity

    No special tools

    Who:
    you.
    How:
in msinfo32, scroll to the bottom of System Summary and find Virtualization-based security. If it is not enabled, go to Windows Security > Device security > Core isolation and turn on Memory Integrity; restart when prompted.
    Result that matters:
    that VBS shows as Running.
    If it is Running:
    restart and open the game.
If it is enabled but not running or the toggle is grayed out:
virtualization is off in the BIOS; a job for someone who knows the BIOS.
    Evidence to keep:
a screenshot of VBS in msinfo32 before and after.

    Evidence: Enable Memory Integrity (HVCI/VBS)

  4. BitLocker recovery key before touching the BIOS

    No special tools

    Who:
    you.
    How:
if your drive is encrypted with BitLocker, find and save the recovery key before changing TPM, Secure Boot or virtualization in the BIOS.
    Result that matters:
having the key at hand outside the PC.
    If you have it:
the technician can make the changes without the risk of locking you out.
    If you cannot find it:
do not change the BIOS until you have it.
    Evidence to keep:
where you stored the key (without pasting it into any message).

    Evidence: Enable TPM 2.0

  • error VAN 9005
  • requires TPM version 2.0 and UEFI compliant firmware
  • VAN 9005 Valorant
  • VAN9005
  • Vanguard VBS TPM 2.0 UEFI

What it means

Riot explains that VAN 9005 means Vanguard requires TPM 2.0 and UEFI compliant firmware to use Virtualization-based Security (VBS), but does not detect the required setup on the PC. It asks to check three things in order: TPM 2.0 enabled, Secure Boot enabled and Memory Integrity (part of VBS) running, restarting after each change. Several need the BIOS or UEFI, and Riot recommends reaching out to a professional if you are not familiar with it. The code does not say which of the three is missing.

Warnings and stop conditions

  • Mediumeditorial warning

Do not use tools that emulate a TPM or claim to bypass Vanguard: Riot only documents enabling the PC's real features. Penalties or account issues go to Riot support.

    Evidence: Error VAN 9005

  • Highsource verified

Riot warns that switching to UEFI without first converting the disk from MBR to GPT stops Windows from booting. If you do not know the BIOS, leave these changes to a professional.

    Evidence: Error VAN 9005

Symptoms and causes

Probable causes · in order

  • TPM 2.0 disabled or on version 1.2Possible

Seen in tpm.msc: TPM not found, or specification 1.2 or lower, which Vanguard does not accept.

    Evidence: Error VAN 9005

  • Secure Boot off or Legacy modePossible

msinfo32 shows Secure Boot State off or BIOS Mode Legacy, which blocks Secure Boot unless the disk is converted first.

    Evidence: Error VAN 9005

  • Memory Integrity or virtualization offPossible

msinfo32 shows VBS not enabled, or enabled but not running, which Riot says usually means virtualization is disabled in the BIOS.
