Risk level

Medium

Proceed carefully and stop if the check is unclear.

Urgency

High

Quick answer

Code E1 (on Medallist Series, shown with the telephone handset icon) or ERR 1 (on Gold Series) points to a drive motor fault in the control valve. Silence the beeper, check the 24 V plug-in transformer, turn the bypass knob clockwise if water runs to drain, and try holding Program for 10 seconds.

Safety first

Stop and check this first

  • Always disconnect the power supply before any servicing to prevent electrical shock; Culligan manuals state that internal valve and electrical repairs belong to trained technicians.
  • When turning the blue Cul-Flo-Valv bypass knob clockwise or counter-clockwise, stop as soon as it reaches the end position and never overtighten it.

Safe checks you can perform

  • Silence the audible alarm and note the exact display code
  • Press and hold the Program button for 10 seconds on Gold Series
  • Check the 24 V plug-in transformer and wall outlet
  • Turn the Cul-Flo-Valv bypass knob clockwise to Bypass

Leave these tasks to a qualified professional

  • Do not attempt this professional task: Drive motor, cam gear and switch inspection by a Culligan technician
  • Do not attempt this professional task: Seal pack, piston or motor replacement on the control valve

What a technician must be able to justify

Technician visit

These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.

These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.

  1. Drive motor, cam gear and switch inspection by a Culligan technician

What they doThe authorized technician disconnects power, opens the control head and tests the drive motor, cam inputs, microswitches or optical sensor and circuit board harness.

They must show youthe control valve stepping cleanly through its cycle positions without E1 or ERR 1 returning.

In writingthe fault found on the motor, cam or board and the completed cycle test.

  2. Seal pack, piston or motor replacement on the control valve

What they doIf a binding piston, worn seal pack or failed drive motor prevents proper rotation, the technician installs the official replacement kit for the 3/4-inch or 1-inch valve and turns the blue bypass knob counter-clockwise back to service.

They must show youthe replaced parts and the Cul-Flo-Valv knob returned counter-clockwise to the Soft Water service position.

In writingthe part numbers installed, leak check results and applicable warranty terms (1 year on the entire conditioner and 10 years on the control valve body per the manual).

Before accepting a part or repair

Nothing has been shown yet. Do not accept a part swap based on the code alone.

Follow these steps

Note: Follow the documented order. An error code identifies the affected system, but it does not prove by itself which part has failed.

  1. Silence the audible alarm and note the exact display code

    No special tools

    Who:
you, at the front display panel.
    How:
check whether the telephone handset icon is lit in the upper left corner alongside E1 or ERR 1. On Gold Series units, beeping occurs only between 8:00 am and 8:00 pm and can be silenced by pressing any key.
    Result that matters:
stopping the beep and confirming whether your softener uses Medallist or Gold Series numbering.
If the screen reads E1 on a Medallist unit:
the manual defines it as Motor will not stop turning.
If the screen reads ERR 1 on a Gold Series unit:
the Accusoft Plus control reports Motor Failure to Start after its 70-second drive attempts.
    Evidence to keep:
a clear photo of the display showing the handset icon and code, plus the model name on the timer cover.

  2. Press and hold the Program button for 10 seconds on Gold Series

    No special tools

    Who:
you, using the keypad without removing the cover.
    How:
on Gold Series conditioners, press and hold the Program key for 10 seconds. The unit will beep and check whether the error condition has cleared.
    Result that matters:
seeing whether the control returns to normal operation or re-displays the alert.
If the code clears and the time of day returns:
reset the clock if needed and watch the next recharge cycle.
If the board re-displays ERR 1 or your Medallist shows E1:
place the softener in bypass and book service.
    Evidence to keep:
a note of whether holding Program for 10 seconds cleared the code or brought it right back.

  3. Check the 24 V plug-in transformer and wall outlet

    No special tools

    Who:
    you.
    How:
confirm that the power cord is plugged fully into the 24 V transformer and wall outlet, make sure the outlet is not controlled by a wall switch that was turned off, and check the house fuse or circuit breaker panel.
    Result that matters:
ruling out a power supply drop before calling a technician.
If the outlet was switched off or loose:
restore power, set the correct time of day and observe the display.
If power is steady and E1 or ERR 1 remains on screen:
the fault lies inside the control head.
    Evidence to keep:
condition of the transformer plug and whether the outlet is on a wall switch.

  4. Turn the Cul-Flo-Valv bypass knob clockwise to Bypass

    No special tools

    Who:
you, at the back of the water softener.
    How:
locate the push-button Cul-Flo-Valv bypass on the back of the unit and turn the blue knob clockwise following the directional arrow until it stops, without overtightening; on a 3-valve bypass, close inlet and outlet valves and open the bypass valve.
    Result that matters:
keeping untreated water flowing to household taps while isolating the control valve.
If the blue knob stops in the clockwise bypass position:
leave it bypassed until the technician arrives.
If extra turning force is needed:
the manual notes that a screwdriver shank may be used gently in the knob slot as a lever, taking care not to overtighten.
    Evidence to keep:
a photo of the blue bypass knob position.

What it means

In the Culligan Medallist Series (P/N 01020482) and Gold Series (P/N 01018854B) Owner's Guides, self-diagnostics monitor the control valve and light a telephone handset symbol in the upper left corner of the display with an alert code. On Medallist Series, E1 means the motor will not stop turning (whereas E2 means motor stuck). On Gold Series with the Accusoft Plus microprocessor, ERR 1 means Motor Failure to Start when the valve fails to reach the desired state within 70 seconds across 3 drive attempts with a 60-second off pause between attempts. Other models may differ, and the code alone never proves which part is faulty.

Warnings and stop conditions

  • Higheditorial warning

Always disconnect the power supply before any servicing to prevent electrical shock; Culligan manuals state that internal valve and electrical repairs belong to trained technicians.

Symptoms and causes

Probable causes · in order

  • Valve fails to reach position within 70 seconds across 3 triesCommon

On Gold Series softeners, the Accusoft Plus board triggers ERR 1 if driving the motor 3 times for 70 seconds each, with a 60-second off period between attempts, fails to reach the target state.

Evidence: Culligan Gold Series Water Conditioner Owner's Guide (P/N 01018854B)

  • Motor will not stop turning or unexpected cam switch changesCommon

In the Medallist Series manual, E1 indicates that the motor will not stop turning; on Gold Series that condition is numbered ERR 2 when cam inputs change while the motor should be off.

Evidence: Culligan Gold Series Water Conditioner Owner's Guide (P/N 01018854B) · Culligan Medallist Series Automatic Water Conditioner Owner's Guide (P/N 01020482)

  • Power interruption or switched 24 V transformer outletPossible

Culligan's pre-service checklist asks you to verify that the 24 V plug-in transformer cord is fully seated in a live outlet not controlled by a wall switch, and to inspect household fuses or breakers.

Evidence: Culligan Gold Series Water Conditioner Owner's Guide (P/N 01018854B) · Culligan Medallist Series Automatic Water Softener Owner's Guide (01020482 Rev F)

  • Mechanical binding in the valve piston, seal pack or drive motorLess common

When the code re-displays immediately after a keypad reset, the manuals direct you to your local Culligan dealer to inspect the motor drive, cam switches and internal seal pack.
