Risk level

Low

Usually safe to check without specialist tools.

Urgency

Medium

Quick answer

RAM disk error. Press [OK]. on a Kyocera ECOSYS cancels the print job because the virtual RAM disk is off, full or hit a format error. Note any two-digit subcode (01, 02, 04, 05 or 06), press [OK], and enable or enlarge the RAM disk in System Menu.

Safety first

Stop and check this first

  • The operation guide notes that you should contact the administrator before changing the RAM disk mode or optional memory allocation, as changing these settings restarts the machine.
  • Because the RAM disk uses volatile memory, any jobs or files stored on the RAM disk are erased whenever you turn the printer power switch off.

Safe checks you can perform

  • Record the two-digit subcode, press [OK], and restart for code 01
  • Enable RAM Disk Mode or increase RAM Disk Size (subcodes 02 and 04)
  • Match the computer print driver to the printer's RAM disk setting

Leave these tasks to a qualified professional

  • Do not attempt this professional task: Memory expansion installation or verification (subcode 06)
  • Do not attempt this professional task: Main board memory diagnosis if subcode 01 repeats after a restart

What a technician must be able to justify

Technician visit

These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.

These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.

  1. Memory expansion installation or verification (subcode 06)

What they doWhen subcode 06 reports insufficient memory to support the RAM disk system or larger jobs require more capacity (expandable up to 1,536 MB on the M2540dn or 3,072 MB on the PA4500cx and PA4000cx), have official Kyocera service or qualified staff install or check the optional DIMM.

They must show youthe printed status page confirming the total installed memory and the allocated RAM disk size.

In writingthe capacity of the memory module fitted and the RAM disk size configured in System Menu.

  2. Main board memory diagnosis if subcode 01 repeats after a restart

What they doIf the 01 abnormal format error keeps returning after turning the printer off, waiting more than 5 seconds and powering it back on, an authorized Kyocera service technician should test the onboard memory.

They must show youa test print or job-retention task completing without a RAM disk error.

In writingthe memory diagnostic findings and any board or memory part replaced.

Before accepting a part or repair

Nothing has been shown yet. Do not accept a part swap based on the code alone.

Follow these steps

Note: Follow the documented order. An error code identifies the affected system, but it does not prove by itself which part has failed.

  1. Record the two-digit subcode, press [OK], and restart for code 01

    No special tools

    Who:
    you.
    How:
write down any two-digit number shown with the message, press [OK] to clear the error, and if subcode 01 appeared, turn the power switch off, wait more than 5 seconds as stated in the manual, and turn it back on.
    Result that matters:
clearing a temporary format error in the virtual RAM disk.
If after waiting more than 5 seconds and powering back on, the job prints normally:
    it was a one-off 01 format glitch.
If subcode 02 or 04 is shown, or the error returns on the next print:
check the RAM disk settings in System Menu.
    Evidence to keep:
photo of the operation panel showing the RAM disk error and its two-digit subcode.

  2. Enable RAM Disk Mode or increase RAM Disk Size (subcodes 02 and 04)

    No special tools

    Who:
you, after checking with the machine administrator as advised by the manual.
    How:
open System Menu, go to [RAM Disk Setting] or [RAM Disk Mode], set it to On for subcode 02, or purge unneeded files and raise [RAM Disk Size] for subcode 04 (on the M2540dn series, choosing printer priority under optional memory expands the available range).
    Result that matters:
giving the virtual disk the active state and space needed to hold the job.
If turning the RAM disk on or increasing its size lets the job finish:
the menu allocation was too small or disabled.
If the size is already at maximum or subcode 06 appears:
check the print driver settings or installed memory.
    Evidence to keep:
photo of the [RAM Disk Mode] and [RAM Disk Size] values in System Menu.

  3. Match the computer print driver to the printer's RAM disk setting

    No special tools

    Who:
    you or your IT administrator.
    How:
if your printer does not use a RAM disk or you do not need job retention, open the printer properties in the computer driver and disable the RAM disk option before resending the document.
    Result that matters:
stopping the driver from requesting RAM disk storage when the feature is switched off on the machine.
If the document prints cleanly once the driver option is unchecked:
the computer was asking for a disabled feature.
If you need RAM disk job retention for large jobs and subcode 06 persists:
the printer needs a memory expansion.
    Evidence to keep:
screenshot of the device settings tab in the print driver.

What it means

The operation guides for the Kyocera ECOSYS PA4500cx, PA4000cx and PA3500cx, for the M2030dn, M2035dn, M2530dn and M2535dn, and for the M2540dn series document RAM disk error. Press [OK]. ##. The active job is canceled when you press [OK]. The M2035dn troubleshooting table defines five subcodes: 01 abnormal format (turn power off and on), 02 RAM disk mode is Off, 04 no disk space on the RAM disk, 05 specified file is not on disk, and 06 no memory to support the RAM disk system. Other Kyocera models may present slightly different menu names, and the message alone never proves the main board or RAM is defective.

Symptoms and causes

Probable causes · in order

  • RAM disk mode is turned Off on the printer (subcode 02)Common

Sending a print or job-retention task that requires the virtual disk while [RAM Disk Mode] is set to Off causes the printer to cancel the job with subcode 02.

  • Insufficient free space on the RAM disk (subcode 04)Common

When stored jobs or a large print job exceed the megabytes allocated in [RAM Disk Size], the printer stops the job with subcode 04 for lack of disk space.

  • Format error (01), missing file on disk (05) or insufficient memory (06)Possible

The guide links 01 to an abnormal format cleared by restarting, 05 to a requested file not being on the disk, and 06 to insufficient memory to run the RAM disk system.
