Arlo blinking amber light on camera: sync or battery problem

Risk level
Low
Usually safe to check without specialist tools.
Urgency
Medium
Quick answer
A blinking amber light on your Arlo camera means it failed to sync with the SmartHub, Base Station or your Wi-Fi, is out of range or has a low battery. Charge the battery for 30 minutes and retry the sync 3 to 10 feet from the SmartHub.
Safety first
Stop and check this first
- Alternating blue and amber is not this alert: Arlo says a firmware update is in progress and you must not turn the camera off.
Safe checks you can perform
- Identify the blinking and charge the battery
- Sync up close and one camera at a time
- If the camera connects directly to the router: network and password
- Factory reset as the last step
Leave these tasks to a qualified professional
- Do not attempt this professional task: Case with Arlo support if it will not sync
- Do not attempt this professional task: Wi-Fi check by your Internet provider or router maker
What a technician must be able to justify
Technician visit
These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.
These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.
Case with Arlo support if it will not sync
What they doIf the camera is still amber after charging, syncing up close and resetting, Arlo support checks the camera, its compatibility and the SmartHub.
They must show youwhether your camera is compatible with your SmartHub or Base Station and the tests they run.
In writingthe case number, the diagnosis and, if the camera is replaced, the reason.
Wi-Fi check by your Internet provider or router maker
What they doIf the camera connects directly to the router and you cannot find a 2.4 GHz network or the router has no Internet, your provider or the router manufacturer checks its settings.
They must show youthat the router broadcasts a 2.4 GHz network with Internet and its name.
In writingthe changes made to the router and the date.
Before accepting a part or repair
Nothing has been shown yet. Do not accept a part swap based on the code alone.
Follow these steps
Note: Follow the documented order. An error code identifies the affected system, but it does not prove by itself which part has failed.
Identify the blinking and charge the battery
- Who:
- you, no tools.
- How:
- note whether the amber light blinks fast, slow or flashes once every 15 or 30 seconds, and find your model in Arlo's LED table. If the camera runs on battery, charge it for at least 30 minutes and try again, as Arlo advises.
- Result that matters:
- knowing whether the light points to a low battery or a sync failure.
- If after charging the light turns blue:
- the battery was blocking the connection.
- If it stays amber with a charged battery:
- retry the sync up close.
- Evidence to keep:
- the camera model, the blinking pattern and the battery level in the app.

Sync up close and one camera at a time
- Who:
- you, with the Arlo Secure app.
- How:
- in the app, check under Devices that the SmartHub or Base Station shows Online and that you are in the correct Location. Place the camera 3 to 10 feet (1 to 3 meters) from it and sync only that camera. On a multi-LED Base Station press Sync without holding it: if you hold it too long the LED blinks amber and you must wait 15 minutes.
- Result that matters:
- the camera light turning fast blinking blue, which means it is syncing.
- If it syncs:
- you can now move it to its spot within range.
- If the SmartHub shows Offline:
- fix its Internet connection first.
- Evidence to keep:
- a screenshot of the SmartHub status and the distance used while syncing.

If the camera connects directly to the router: network and password
- Who:
- you, with your phone next to the camera.
- How:
- connect your phone to the 2.4 GHz network you want the camera on (Arlo does not support 5 GHz), type the exact network name and password, which are case sensitive, keep the camera 10 to 15 feet (3 to 4.5 meters) from the router and turn off any VPN on the phone. If the light stops blinking after two minutes, press the sync button again.
- Result that matters:
- the app discovering the camera with the light blinking blue throughout.
- If it connects:
- the band, password or distance was the problem.
- If it is not discovered:
- consider a factory reset as the last step.
- Evidence to keep:
- the network name used, its band and the distance to the router.
Evidence: What to do when Arlo is unable to discover your device during an install or setup directly to a Wi-Fi router
Factory reset as the last step
- Who:
- you, only if you accept setting it up again.
- How:
- if nothing above works, Arlo suggests factory resetting the camera and, if that fails, the SmartHub or Base Station, following its guide for your model. Bear in mind that resetting the SmartHub means adding every camera again.
- Result that matters:
- the camera syncing again after the reset.
- If it syncs:
- the saved configuration was blocking the connection.
- If it is still amber:
- contact Arlo support with these tests.
- Evidence to keep:
- the reset date and which devices you reset.
Resetting the SmartHub or Base Station removes all its cameras from your account and they must be added again.

What it means
Arlo explains that the meaning depends on the model. On Ultra, Pro 3, Pro 4, Pro 3 Floodlight and the Essential range, fast blinking amber means the camera failed to sync with the SmartHub, Base Station or Wi-Fi network, and slow blinking amber means it cannot be found, is out of range, a pairing error occurred or the battery is low. On the Pro 5 any amber blinking has that same meaning, and on Pro 2, Pro and Wire-Free slow amber means low batteries. The light on its own never proves the camera is faulty.

- Camera too far away while syncingCommon
Syncing does not work if the camera is too far from the SmartHub or Base Station; Arlo asks you to place it 3 to 10 feet (1 to 3 meters) away while pairing.

- 5 GHz Wi-Fi, wrong password or a VPNPossible
When connecting the camera directly to the router, Arlo requires a 2.4 GHz network, the exact name and password and no VPN on your phone.
Evidence: What to do when Arlo is unable to discover your device during an install or setup directly to a Wi-Fi router
- Camera not compatible with your SmartHubLess common
Arlo asks you to check that the camera is compatible with your SmartHub or Base Station before syncing, because not every combination works.
