Risk level

Low

Usually safe to check without specialist tools.

Urgency

Low

Quick answer

On a ZenWiFi AiMesh node, a solid yellow or orange light means the node is joined to the AiMesh router over Wi-Fi, but the signal is weak. Move the node closer to the router (ASUS suggests 3 to 5 metres), with fewer walls between them and at mid height.

Safety first

Stop and check this first

  • Check whether the yellow light is steady or flashing: in the ZenWiFi table, flashing belongs to a node reset, not to a weak signal.
  • When you reset the AiMesh system, ASUS advises against importing a saved settings file so that old connection problems are not carried over.

Safe checks you can perform

  • Confirm the state in the web interface or app
  • Reposition the node
  • Try the recommended Wi-Fi settings
  • Reset the system or wire the backhaul

What a technician must be able to justify

Technician visit

These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.

These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.

  1. Link review by ASUS support

What they doIf the node stays yellow or orange a few metres from the router with default settings, ASUS support reviews the AiMesh setup and the node itself.

They must show youthe AiMesh page with the orange line, the distance between units and the settings you tried.

In writingthe case number, the diagnosis, the router and node firmware versions and whether warranty applies.

  2. Ask ASUS which unit should lead

What they doIf you mix different models (for example a Wi-Fi 7 router with older nodes), ask ASUS support which unit should be the main router and how to set MLO.

They must show youthe model of each unit and whether MLO is enabled on the main router.

In writingthe case number and the recommended setup for your mix of models.

Before accepting a part or repair

Nothing has been shown yet. Do not accept a part swap based on the code alone.

Follow these steps

Note: Follow the documented order. An error code identifies the affected system, but it does not prove by itself which part has failed.

  1. Confirm the state in the web interface or app

    No special tools

    Who:
    you.
    How:
log in to the AiMesh router settings, open the AiMesh page and click the information icon for the level chart; in the ASUS Router app the LED Guide sits under Settings > AiMesh.
    Result that matters:
see whether the line linking node and router is orange, meaning a weak signal.
    If the line is orange:
the issue is signal quality between router and node.
If the node shows as disconnected or the colour is flashing:
this is not the case, check the full colour table.
    Evidence to keep:
screenshot of the AiMesh page with the node line.

  2. Reposition the node

    No special tools

    Who:
    you.
    How:
place the node about 3 to 5 metres from the AiMesh router, on a flat hard surface, halfway between floor and ceiling and, where possible, with line of sight and few walls in between.
    Result that matters:
the node light turns white, the colour for a node connected without issues.
    If it turns white:
keep the node in that spot.
If it stays yellow or orange:
try the Wi-Fi settings ASUS suggests.
    Evidence to keep:
note of the new location and the light colour after a few minutes.

  3. Try the recommended Wi-Fi settings

    No special tools

    Who:
you, logged in to the settings page of the main AiMesh router.
    How:
turn off Smart Connect if you use it, try disabling DFS channels and, if the main router is Wi-Fi 7 with MLO on under Wireless > MLO, bear in mind that nodes without MLO will not broadcast 6 GHz.
    Result that matters:
find out whether the node link improves without moving the units again.
If the line stops being orange:
    keep those settings.
    If nothing changes:
consider resetting the AiMesh system or moving to a wired backhaul.
    Evidence to keep:
list of settings changed and the result of each.

  4. Reset the system or wire the backhaul

    No special tools

    Who:
    you.
    How:
reset the AiMesh system and set it up manually without importing a saved settings file, or swap the roles of router and node; if you can run cable, use CAT 5e or CAT 6 and a Gigabit switch.
    Result that matters:
clear inherited settings or replace the weak Wi-Fi link with a wired one.
If after the reset or with cable the node stays white:
    the link is fixed.
If it stays weak even close to the router:
contact ASUS and list what you already tried.
    Evidence to keep:
note of the firmware version, cable type and result.

What it means

The official ZenWiFi LED colour table (XT8, CT8, XD4, XD6, ET8, BT10 and others) says that on a node, non-flashing yellow or orange means it is connected to the AiMesh router through Wi-Fi backhaul with a weak signal. On the AiMesh page of the web interface the same thing shows as an orange line. If that colour is flashing it is a different state: the node is resetting after Reset was held. Other models may show it differently. That colour alone does not prove the node has a fault.

Warnings and stop conditions

  • Lowsource verified

Check whether the yellow light is steady or flashing: in the ZenWiFi table, flashing belongs to a node reset, not to a weak signal.

Symptoms and causes

Probable causes · in order

  • Node too far from the AiMesh routerCommon

ASUS recommends placing the router and node about 3 to 5 metres apart; more distance weakens the Wi-Fi link between node and router.

Evidence: [AiMesh] How to Improve the Signal Quality between your AiMesh Router and AiMesh Node?

  • Dense walls or obstacles in betweenCommon

According to ASUS, fewer walls between router and node means better performance; plaster, lath or chicken wire in walls are especially hard on Wi-Fi.

Evidence: [AiMesh] How to Improve the Signal Quality between your AiMesh Router and AiMesh Node?

  • Low or unstable placementPossible

ASUS explains that routers radiate mostly along the plane they sit on, so it asks for a flat, hard surface at a height halfway between floor and ceiling.

Evidence: [AiMesh] How to Improve the Signal Quality between your AiMesh Router and AiMesh Node?

  • Wi-Fi settings that hurt the linkPossible

The ASUS guide suggests trying with Smart Connect off, DFS channels disabled and, on Wi-Fi 7 routers, reviewing MLO when some nodes lack it.
