Quick answer

On a ZenWiFi AiMesh node, a solid red light means Ethernet backhaul mode is enabled but the node is not wired to the AiMesh router. Connect the node with a network cable or review that mode in the web interface.

Safety first

Stop and check this first

  • Resetting the node returns it to factory settings and removes it from the AiMesh system: you will need to add it again. Reset only the affected node.
  • Before enabling Ethernet backhaul mode, ASUS asks for every node to be cabled already; otherwise nodes may lose their connection.

Safe checks you can perform

  • Confirm which unit shows the red light
  • Cable the node to the router or another node
  • Review Ethernet backhaul mode
  • Reset the node the way ASUS describes

Leave these tasks to a qualified professional

  • Do not attempt this professional task: Open a case with ASUS support
  • Do not attempt this professional task: Line check if the red light is on the router

What a technician must be able to justify

Technician visit

These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.

These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.

  1. Open a case with ASUS support

What they doIf the node stays red with the cable firmly connected and the backhaul mode reviewed, ASUS support goes through the AiMesh system with you.

They must show youthe AiMesh topology, the active backhaul mode and the node link status.

In writingthe case number, the diagnosis and whether the node is covered by warranty.

  2. Line check if the red light is on the router

What they doIf the red light is on the AiMesh router rather than a node, ASUS links it to no Internet: your provider checks the line and the modem.

They must show youthe line and modem status in their diagnosis.

In writingthe ticket number, the cause and the date it was fixed.

Before accepting a part or repair

Nothing has been shown yet. Do not accept a part swap based on the code alone.

Follow these steps

Note: Follow the documented order. An error code identifies the affected system, but it does not prove by itself which part has failed.

  1. Confirm which unit shows the red light

    No special tools

    Who:
    you.
    How:
work out whether the red light is on the AiMesh router, the one connected to the modem, or on a node; the ASUS Router app shows the colour guide under Settings, AiMesh, the unit and LED Guide.
    Result that matters:
knowing whether it is an Internet problem (router) or a node link problem.
If it is the AiMesh router:
red means no Internet, check the link to the modem.
    If it is a node:
check the backhaul cable and the Ethernet backhaul mode.
    Evidence to keep:
photo of each unit with its light and which one goes to the modem.

  2. Cable the node to the router or another node

    No special tools

    Who:
    you.
    How:
run a network cable from the AiMesh router, or from another node that is already connected, to the node showing red; make sure the cable is seated firmly at both ends.
    Result that matters:
the node regaining its uplink and the light turning white.
    If it turns white:
the node is connected over Ethernet backhaul.
If it stays red with the cable in place:
try another cable or review the backhaul settings.
    Evidence to keep:
photo of the cable plugged into both units and the final light colour.

  3. Review Ethernet backhaul mode

    No special tools

    Who:
you, from the AiMesh router web interface.
    How:
go to AiMesh, System Settings, and see whether Ethernet Backhaul Mode is on; if that node cannot be cabled, go to AiMesh, Topology, the node, Management, and set Backhaul Connection Priority to Auto.
    Result that matters:
the settings matching how each node is really connected.
If you adjust the mode and the node turns white again:
    keep that configuration.
    If it stays red:
consider resetting only that node as the ASUS table describes.
    Evidence to keep:
screenshot of Ethernet Backhaul Mode and of the node connection priority.

  4. Reset the node the way ASUS describes

    No special tools

    Who:
you, if the steps above do not solve it.
    How:
on the affected node, press and hold the reset button for 5 to 10 seconds until the light starts to change; afterwards you will need to add it to your AiMesh system again.
    Result that matters:
the node returning to factory state so you can pair it again.
If it is added and stays white:
    the node works.
If it will not add or goes back to red:
    contact ASUS support.
    Evidence to keep:
date of the reset and the result when adding it again.

What it means

In the official ZenWiFi LED colour table (XT8, CT8, XD4, XD6, ET8, BT10 and others), ASUS separates the AiMesh router, the first one connected to the modem, from the nodes. On the router a solid red light means no Internet; on a node it means Ethernet backhaul mode is enabled and the node is not wired to the AiMesh router, so it loses its uplink. ASUS says that in this mode every node should be cabled. The light alone never proves the node is faulty.

Symptoms and causes

Probable causes · in order

  • Ethernet backhaul mode on, node not wiredCommon

ASUS links a solid red node light to Ethernet backhaul mode being enabled while the node is not wired to the AiMesh router.
