Quick answer

The bank 1 intake cam phaser is more advanced than the engine computer commands. Check the oil level with the engine cold and get the phaser diagnosed before replacing sensors.

Safety first

Stop and check this first

  • Driving for long with low oil worsens the phaser problem and can damage the engine; top up and book an inspection.

Safe checks you can perform

  • Oil level and age
  • Variable timing codes

Leave these tasks to a qualified professional

  • Do not attempt this professional task: Phaser command test
  • Do not attempt this professional task: Verification after the repair

What a technician must be able to justify

Technician visit

These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.

These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.

  1. Phaser command test

What they doThe technician commands the phaser with diagnostic equipment, compares desired and actual position, and measures the solenoid valve.

They must show youdesired against actual position during the test and the solenoid measurement.

In writingthe part replaced and the test that justified it.

  2. Verification after the repair

What they doThe technician repeats the command test and confirms the actual position follows the desired one when hot.

They must show youthe new position comparison.

In writingthe result and that no code is pending.

Before accepting a part or repair

Nothing has been shown yet. Do not accept a part swap based on the code alone.

Follow these steps

Note: Follow the documented order. An error code identifies the affected system, but it does not prove by itself which part has failed.

  1. Oil level and age

    No special tools

    Who:
you, with the engine cold and the car on level ground.
    How:
check the level with the dipstick and look in the service book for when the oil was changed and what type it uses.
    Result that matters:
whether the level is low or the oil is overdue or not the specified type.
If the level is low or the change is overdue:
tell the workshop; oil is the first variable for the phaser.
If the oil is in order:
the workshop should test the solenoid valve and the phaser.
    Evidence to keep:
a photo of the dipstick and of the last oil change entry.

Only with the engine cold and off; do not open the filler cap with a hot engine.

  2. Variable timing codes

    Tools required

    Who:
you, with the car parked and a generic OBD-II reader plugged into the diagnostic socket.
    How:
read all codes and save the P0011 freeze frame.
    Result that matters:
whether P0016 or phaser circuit codes also appear.
    If P0016 appears:
tell the workshop, because the timing drive must be checked as well as the phaser.
    If P0011 is alone:
the workshop should focus on oil, solenoid valve and phaser.
    Evidence to keep:
a photo of the codes and the freeze frame (temperature and engine speed).

Use the reader only with the car stopped. Do not press the clear option: under the OBD rules the freeze frame is erased together with the code.

  • P0011 OBD2

What it means

P0011 is the generic code for intake camshaft timing over-advanced on bank 1. In Ford's documentation, the variable cam timing monitor compares the position the computer commands from the phaser with the position the camshaft and crankshaft sensors read, and needs oil pressure for the phaser to move. If the actual position stays advanced, the cause can be the oil, the solenoid valve that controls it, the phaser itself or the timing drive. The code does not prove which.

Warnings and stop conditions

  • Mediumeditorial warning

Driving for long with low oil worsens the phaser problem and can damage the engine; top up and book an inspection.

Symptoms and causes

Probable causes · in order

  • OilPossible

Low level, very old oil or a viscosity different from the specified one change the phaser response. Suspect it if the oil change is overdue.

Evidence: Ford 2020-2023 gasoline OBD system operation

  • Solenoid valve or phaserPossible

A solenoid that sticks open or a seized phaser keeps the advance. It is separated by commanding the phaser with diagnostic equipment.

Evidence: Ford 2020-2023 gasoline OBD system operation

  • Timing driveLess common

A shifted timing drive changes the starting position. Suspect it if P0016 also appears.
