Quick answer

The engine computer sees the camshaft position does not match the crankshaft position on bank 1. Check the oil level with the engine cold and get a diagnosis; do not ignore it even if the car runs well.

Safety first

Stop and check this first

  • If you hear a metallic noise from the timing drive, stop using the car: a timing drive that jumps can cause serious engine damage.

Safe checks you can perform

  • Oil level with the engine cold
  • Timing noise and codes

Leave these tasks to a qualified professional

What a technician must be able to justify

Technician visit

These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.

These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.

  1. Correlation and timing check

What they doThe technician reads camshaft versus crankshaft position data and, if they do not match, checks the timing following the manufacturer's procedure.

They must show youthe correlation data and, if the timing is opened, photos of the timing marks.

In writingthe condition of the chain or belt, tensioner and phaser, and what is replaced.

  2. Oil pressure and phaser

What they doThe technician checks oil pressure and the operation of the phaser and its solenoid valve.

They must show youthe measured pressure against specification and the phaser response.

In writingthe result and the repair applied.

Before accepting a part or repair

Nothing has been shown yet. Do not accept a part swap based on the code alone.

Follow these steps

Note: Follow the documented order. An error code identifies the affected system, but it does not prove by itself which part has failed.

  1. Oil level with the engine cold

    No special tools

    Who:
you, with the car on level ground and the engine cold.
    How:
pull the dipstick, wipe it, put it back and check the level between the marks; note the date of the last oil change.
    Result that matters:
whether the level is below minimum or the change is long overdue.
    If the level is low:
top up with the oil your manual specifies and tell the workshop; the phaser depends on oil pressure.
    If the level is correct:
the cause is in the timing drive, phaser or sensors and needs a workshop.
    Evidence to keep:
a photo of the dipstick and the date or mileage of the last oil change.

Only with the engine cold and off; do not open the oil cap with a hot engine.

  2. Timing noise and codes

    Tools required

    Who:
you, with a generic OBD-II reader.
    How:
listen for a metallic noise on a cold start, read all codes and save the P0016 freeze frame.
    Result that matters:
whether there is noise at start-up and whether variable timing or camshaft and crankshaft sensor codes appear.
If there is a metallic noise at start-up:
tell the workshop and avoid stressing the engine, because it points to the timing drive.
If there is no noise and sensor codes appear:
the workshop should start with those circuits.
    Evidence to keep:
a short video with sound of the cold start and a photo of the codes.

Plug in and read the tool with the car parked somewhere safe, never while driving. Do not clear the codes: clearing them also erases the freeze frame data the workshop needs.

Known code variants

  • P0016 crankshaft camshaft correlation
  • P0016 OBD2

What it means

P0016 is the generic code for crankshaft and camshaft position correlation on bank 1. In Ford's documentation the variable cam timing monitor watches it, using the crankshaft and camshaft sensors and needing enough oil pressure to move the phaser. A position mismatch can come from the timing drive (chain or belt and its tension), the phaser, the oil or the sensors. The code does not say which, and the mechanical causes can be serious.

Warnings and stop conditions

  • Higheditorial warning

If you hear a metallic noise from the timing drive, stop using the car: a timing drive that jumps can cause serious engine damage.

Symptoms and causes

Probable causes · in order

  • Timing drive shifted or stretchedPossible

A stretched chain or belt or a jumped tooth changes the crankshaft to camshaft relationship. It is confirmed by checking the timing.

Evidence: Ford 2020-2023 gasoline OBD system operation

  • Oil and phaserPossible

The cam phaser works on oil pressure. Low level or the wrong oil upset its position.

Evidence: Ford 2020-2023 gasoline OBD system operation

  • Position sensorsPossible

A camshaft or crankshaft sensor with a wrong signal produces a false correlation. Suspect it with circuit codes for those sensors.
