P0175
P0175 (generic OBD-II): system too rich, bank 2

Risk level
Medium
Proceed carefully and stop if the check is unclear.
Urgency
Medium
Quick answer
The engine computer had to remove more fuel than allowed on bank 2. If you smell petrol, do not start the car and do not smoke nearby. Otherwise, read the codes, save the freeze frame and do not clear them.
Safety first
Stop and check this first
- With a petrol smell, do not start the car or smoke near it; call for assistance.
Safe checks you can perform
- Smell of petrol
- Sensor codes alongside P0175
- Live fuel trims on both banks
Leave these tasks to a qualified professional
- Do not attempt this professional task: Live sensor data and trims
- Do not attempt this professional task: Fuel pressure and bank 2 injectors
What a technician must be able to justify
Technician visit
These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.
These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.
Live sensor data and trims
What they doThe technician compares the MAF sensor, temperatures, throttle and both banks' trims live against the freeze frame.
They must show youeach sensor reading against what is expected and both banks' trims.
In writingwhich sensor or system was found to be the cause and how it was proven.
Fuel pressure and bank 2 injectors
What they doIf only bank 2 corrects, the technician measures fuel pressure and tests that bank's injectors with the manufacturer's equipment.
They must show youthe measured pressure against the manufacturer's specification and the injector test result.
In writingwhich part is replaced, which measurement justifies it and the trims afterwards.
Before accepting a part or repair
Nothing has been shown yet. Do not accept a part swap based on the code alone.
Follow these steps
Note: Follow the documented order. An error code identifies the affected system, but it does not prove by itself which part has failed.
Smell of petrol
- Who:
- you, with the engine off, walking round the car outdoors.
- How:
- check for a strong petrol smell in the engine bay, under the car or inside the cabin, without lighting anything.
- Result that matters:
- whether there is a persistent fuel smell.
- If there is a smell:
- do not start the car, do not smoke or make sparks nearby; call for assistance. A fuel leak is not diagnosed by driving.
- If there is no smell:
- move on to reading the codes.
- Evidence to keep:
- where you noticed the smell and whether there were stains on the ground.
Never look for a leak with a flame or with a hot engine.

Sensor codes alongside P0175
- Who:
- you, with a generic OBD-II reader and the car parked.
- How:
- read every code. Note whether P0175 comes with P0172 or with MAF, temperature or fuel pressure codes.
- Result that matters:
- whether a sensor the monitor depends on has its own code.
- If there are codes for those sensors:
- the workshop must fix them first, because Ford needs them fault free to monitor the mixture.
- If P0175 is alone:
- this points to a bank 2 issue; the workshop compares both banks' trims.
- Evidence to keep:
- a photo of the codes and the freeze frame.
Read with the car parked and do not clear the codes.

Live fuel trims on both banks
- Who:
- the workshop, with diagnostic equipment.
- How:
- compare bank 1 and bank 2 long-term and short-term trims under the freeze frame conditions.
- Result that matters:
- whether only bank 2 removes fuel or both do.
- If only bank 2:
- this confirms a cause on that side, such as that bank's injectors.
- If both banks correct lean:
- this points to a shared cause, such as fuel pressure or air measurement.
- Evidence to keep:
- trim readings for both banks with engine speed and temperature.
Workshop test with the engine running.

What it means
P0175 is the generic code for system too rich on bank 2. In Ford's OBD summary the fuel monitor works in closed loop and sets the fault when long-term fuel trim, added to short-term trim, has to remove fuel beyond the limit. Ford also requires fuel pressure, intake air and engine temperature, the MAF sensor and the throttle to be fault free. The code says there is too much fuel, not where it comes from.
Warnings and stop conditions
- Higheditorial warning
With a petrol smell, do not start the car or smoke near it; call for assistance.

Symptoms and causes
Probable causes · in order
- Wrong air or temperature readingPossible
The monitor relies on the MAF sensor, air and engine temperature and the throttle. Suspect it when codes for those sensors come with P0175.
Evidence: Ford 2020-2023 gasoline OBD system operation
- Extra fuel on bank 2Possible
High fuel pressure or bank 2 injectors delivering too much. It shows when bank 1 is normal and only bank 2 corrects.
Evidence: Ford 2020-2023 gasoline OBD system operation
- EVAP system vapoursPossible
Ford uses the canister purge duty cycle as a monitor condition; purge feeds fuel vapour into the intake. Consider it if the fault matches active purge.
