P0300
P0300 (generic OBD-II): random or multiple cylinder misfire

Risk level
High
Professional inspection is recommended.
Urgency
High
Quick answer
The engine computer detected misfires it cannot pin on a single cylinder. If the engine light flashes, stop somewhere safe. Read the codes and save the freeze frame before any repair.
Safety first
Stop and check this first
- If the engine light flashes, the misfire can damage the catalytic converter; stop somewhere safe and do not test it by driving on.
Safe checks you can perform
- Engine light steady or flashing
- Fuel level and last fill-up
- All codes and the freeze frame data
Leave these tasks to a qualified professional

What a technician must be able to justify
Technician visit
These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.
These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.
History and bulletins before replacing parts
What they doThe technician reviews the car's repair history and the manufacturer's misfire service bulletins for your VIN.
They must show youthe bulletin lookup for your VIN and the history reviewed.
In writingthe bulletin applied, if any, and the final check under the recorded conditions.
Per-cylinder misfire counters
What they doThe technician reads the misfire counters for each cylinder and recreates the freeze frame conditions to see whether the misfire is spread out or concentrated.
They must show youeach cylinder's counter during the test.
In writingwhich common cause was checked (fuel, mixture, sensors, grounds) and the result.
Before accepting a part or repair
Nothing has been shown yet. Do not accept a part swap based on the code alone.
Follow these steps
Note: Follow the documented order. An error code identifies the affected system, but it does not prove by itself which part has failed.
Engine light steady or flashing
- Who:
- you, watching the instrument cluster with the engine running.
- How:
- check whether the engine light stays on or flashes while you drive. Do not confuse this with a brief flash at key-on with the engine off: some cars do that only to show that the OBD monitors have not finished.
- Result that matters:
- whether the light flashes with the engine running.
- If it flashes while driving:
- there is a misfire that can damage the catalytic converter. Stop somewhere safe and follow your owner's manual; Honda, for example, says to stop away from flammable objects, switch the engine off for at least 10 minutes and take the car to a dealer.
- If it stays on:
- note P0300 and book an inspection. A steady light does not rule the misfire out, because the regulation lets some cars cut fuel instead of flashing the light.
- Evidence to keep:
- whether it flashed or stayed on, in what situation (cold, idle, uphill, accelerating) and since what date.
With a flashing light, do not keep driving to see whether it goes off by itself.

Fuel level and last fill-up
- Who:
- you.
- How:
- check the fuel level and remember whether the fault appeared with the low-fuel light on or right after filling up at an unusual station.
- Result that matters:
- whether the code matches a nearly empty tank or a specific fill-up.
- If it appeared with the tank nearly empty:
- tell the workshop, because Volkswagen notes the misfire may then come from the low level and not from the coils.
- If there is no link to fuel:
- the workshop should continue with the other codes and the freeze frame.
- Evidence to keep:
- the fuel level when the code set and the receipt of the last fill-up.

All codes and the freeze frame data
- Who:
- you, with a generic OBD-II reader in the diagnostic socket.
- How:
- read the confirmed and pending codes and save the freeze frame data for P0300 before anyone clears anything.
- Result that matters:
- whether other codes appear alongside the misfire and under what conditions it was stored.
- If there are codes from other systems (sensors, injectors, mixture, low fuel level):
- the workshop should resolve them before the misfire, as Volkswagen's diagnostic aid requires.
- If only misfire codes appear:
- the freeze frame (engine speed, load, temperature) tells the workshop under which conditions to reproduce the fault.
- Evidence to keep:
- a photo or screenshot of the full code list and of the freeze frame screen.
Plug in and read the tool with the car parked somewhere safe, never while driving. Do not clear the codes: clearing them also erases the freeze frame data the workshop needs.

What it means
P0300 is the generic code for random or multiple cylinder misfire. The misfire monitor uses the crankshaft and camshaft sensor signals, plus the airflow measurement, to detect combustion events that add no rotation. When the misfire jumps between cylinders, the cause is often common to all of them: fuel, deposits on injectors and valves, low fuel level, mixture or a shared connection. That is why replacing coils or plugs without a diagnosis rarely fixes it.

Symptoms and causes
Probable causes · in order
- Fuel and depositsPossible
Volkswagen links poor fuel quality to deposits on injectors and intake valves that cause sporadic misfires, especially on cold starts.
Evidence: Volkswagen TSB 2033846 sporadic misfire faults
- Low fuel levelPossible
With an almost empty tank, misfires can be logged without an ignition fault. Ford has a separate code for misfire with low fuel level.

- Cause shared by several cylindersPossible
Mixture, crankshaft or camshaft sensors, grounds or shared connections. Suspect it when other engine codes appear with P0300.
