Quick answer

The bank 1 catalyst monitor returned a result below its threshold. It does not mean the catalytic converter must be replaced. Read all codes, save the freeze frame and resolve any other code first.

Safety first

Stop and check this first

  • Replacing the converter without ruling out sensors, mixture and misfire can leave the same code and an unresolved fault.

Safe checks you can perform

  • Steady light and fuel cap
  • Companion codes and freeze frame
  • Monitor result and sensor response

Leave these tasks to a qualified professional

  • Do not attempt this professional task: Monitor diagnosis before the converter
  • Do not attempt this professional task: Check after the repair

What a technician must be able to justify

Technician visit

These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.

These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.

  1. Monitor diagnosis before the converter

What they doThe technician reads the bank 1 catalyst monitor result, checks the oxygen sensors and rules out misfire and mixture faults.

They must show youthe monitor value against the limit and the upstream and downstream sensor signals.

In writingwhich other faults were ruled out and, if the converter is replaced, why and with what part number.

  2. Check after the repair

What they doAfter the repair, the technician lets the catalyst monitor complete again and confirms the code does not return.

They must show youthe catalyst monitor status as complete.

In writingthe date and mileage at which the monitor completed without a code.

Before accepting a part or repair

Nothing has been shown yet. Do not accept a part swap based on the code alone.

Follow these steps

Note: Follow the documented order. An error code identifies the affected system, but it does not prove by itself which part has failed.

  1. Steady light and fuel cap

    No special tools

    Who:
    you, with the car parked.
    How:
check whether the engine light is steady or flashing with the engine running and, with the engine off, make sure the fuel cap is fitted and fully closed.
    Result that matters:
whether the light flashes at any point.
    If it flashes:
this is not an isolated P0420, there is an active misfire; stop somewhere safe and follow your owner's manual.
If it is steady and the cap was fine:
a loose cap does not explain P0420 on its own, so move on to reading the codes.
    Evidence to keep:
the light's state (steady or flashing) and whether the cap was loose.

  2. Companion codes and freeze frame

    Tools required

    Who:
you, with a generic OBD-II reader in the diagnostic socket.
    How:
read the confirmed and pending codes and save the P0420 freeze frame before clearing anything.
    Result that matters:
whether P0420 is alone or comes with oxygen sensor, misfire or mixture codes.
If there are other engine codes:
according to Ford, those faults stop the catalyst monitor from giving a valid result; the workshop must fix them first.
    If P0420 is alone:
the next step is measuring the catalyst monitor at the workshop, not replacing the converter outright.
    Evidence to keep:
a photo of the code list and of the freeze frame (temperature, engine speed, road speed).

Use the reader only with the car stopped. Do not press the clear option: under the OBD rules the freeze frame is erased together with the code.

  3. Monitor result and sensor response

    Tools required

    Who:
    the workshop, with diagnostic equipment.
    How:
read the catalyst monitor result (mode 6 data if the car provides it) and the response of the upstream and downstream sensors.
    Result that matters:
the measured monitor value against the calibration limit and whether the sensors respond.
If the sensors respond well and the monitor is still out of limit:
the converter becomes the stronger suspect.
If a sensor responds poorly or has circuit codes:
fix the sensor before condemning the converter.
    Evidence to keep:
a capture of the monitor result and of both sensor signals.

Do not remove anything from the exhaust or get under the car: hot exhaust, workshop only.

What it means

P0420 is the generic code for catalyst system efficiency below threshold on bank 1 (the side of the engine with cylinder 1). In Ford's OBD documentation, the monitor assesses the catalyst's oxygen storage using the oxygen sensors before and after it. That monitor makes no pass or fail call while other systems such as oxygen sensors, misfire, mixture or engine temperature are faulty. So the code does not prove the converter is worn out: a sensor or an earlier fault can produce the same result.

Warnings and stop conditions

  • Mediumeditorial warning

Replacing the converter without ruling out sensors, mixture and misfire can leave the same code and an unresolved fault.

Symptoms and causes

Probable causes · in order

  • Low catalyst capacityPossible

The converter stores less oxygen than the calibration requires. Accept it as the cause only once the sensors and other systems are verified.

Evidence: Ford 2020-2023 gasoline OBD system operation

  • Oxygen sensorsPossible

The monitor relies on the upstream and downstream sensors. A slow sensor or a circuit fault skews the measurement even with a good converter.

Evidence: Ford 2020-2023 gasoline OBD system operation

  • Earlier fault in another systemPossible

Misfire, lean or rich mixture or other engine codes affect the converter or its monitor. Suspect it when P0420 comes with other codes.
