Risk level

Low

Usually safe to check without specialist tools.

Urgency

Medium

Quick answer

With the engine warm and the throttle released, idle speed stayed above target even though the engine computer had already reduced the air it controls. Air getting in another way is common. Read the codes and do not clear them.

Safety first

Stop and check this first

  • With high idle on an automatic, the car can creep harder when you release the brake: keep your foot on the brake when stopped.

Safe checks you can perform

  • Warm idle speed
  • Hiss or loose hose
  • Companion codes

Leave these tasks to a qualified professional

  • Do not attempt this professional task: Smoke test and fuel trims
  • Do not attempt this professional task: Throttle and idle relearn

What a technician must be able to justify

Technician visit

These are the steps they must carry out and show you. Tick them as they work: if steps are skipped, do not accept a part swap.

These are not instructions for opening or handling the equipment yourself. They are the checks that should support a technical conclusion.

  1. Smoke test and fuel trims

What they doThe technician checks fuel trim at idle and runs an intake smoke test to locate air entries.

They must show youfuel trim at idle and the point where smoke escapes.

In writingthe leak found and the part replaced.

  2. Throttle and idle relearn

What they doThe technician checks throttle position at idle in live data, cleans or tests it if needed and runs the manufacturer's idle relearn procedure.

They must show youthrottle position and target against actual idle speed after the work.

In writingwhat was done and that the code has not returned.

Before accepting a part or repair

Nothing has been shown yet. Do not accept a part swap based on the code alone.

Follow these steps

Note: Follow the documented order. An error code identifies the affected system, but it does not prove by itself which part has failed.

  1. Warm idle speed

    No special tools

    Who:
you, with the engine warm, the car stopped and the handbrake on.
    How:
watch the rev counter with all loads off (air conditioning, lights, rear demister).
    Result that matters:
whether idle is clearly higher than usual for your car.
    If it is high:
this confirms the symptom; tell the workshop the approximate figure.
    If it looks normal:
the fault may be intermittent; the freeze frame will show when it set.
    Evidence to keep:
a photo of the rev counter at warm idle.

  2. Hiss or loose hose

    No special tools

    Who:
you, with the bonnet open and the engine idling, keeping clear of moving parts.
    How:
listen for an air hiss and look for any loose or split rubber hose on the intake.
    Result that matters:
whether there is an obvious air entry.
If there is a hiss or a loose hose:
photograph it and tell the workshop; it points to a leak.
    If nothing obvious:
it does not rule a leak out; the workshop will do a smoke test.
    Evidence to keep:
a photo or video with sound of the engine bay.

Keep your hands away from belts and the fan with the engine running.

  3. Companion codes

    Tools required

    Who:
you, with a generic OBD-II reader and the car parked.
    How:
read the codes and save the freeze frame. Note any P0171, P0174, throttle or engine temperature codes.
    Result that matters:
whether lean mixture or throttle codes come with P0507.
If there is a lean mixture code:
this supports a vacuum leak as the cause.
If there are throttle or temperature codes:
    the workshop checks those first.
    Evidence to keep:
a photo of the codes and the freeze frame.

    Do not clear the codes.

  • P0507 ralentí alto

What it means

P0507 is the generic code for idle speed higher than expected. In Ford's OBD summary the check runs continuously with a warm engine, in closed loop and with the throttle closed, and sets the fault when actual speed exceeds the target while the idle air correction is already at minimum. In other words, the engine computer cannot reduce the air it controls any further. That points to uncontrolled air (a vacuum leak) or a throttle that does not close. The code does not locate the air entry.

Warnings and stop conditions

Symptoms and causes

Probable causes · in order

  • Vacuum leakCommon

Air entering after the throttle raises idle speed. Ford notes leaks weigh more on the mixture at idle and are located with smoke.

  • Throttle not closing fullyPossible

Dirt or an electronic throttle fault lets extra air past. It shows when throttle position at idle is checked in live data.

  • Wrong temperature or speed signalPossible

Ford uses engine temperature and vehicle speed in the test. If either has its own code, the idle target may be miscalculated.
